Top notch Borno, the first heron shot is stellar and the re-crop more so.

First one from a forest rally yesterday. The mischevious part of me likes the idea of sending our resident lens perfectionists into a frenzy

Cool! I like the halo.

Went hiking this weekend. There are a few inches of snow in the lower Kenai Mts here in Alaska. I couldn't stay on this ridge for long...windchill was probably below zero F. The 5DII held up. I'd like to get a nice WR wide angle zoom (16-50?) for the K5 as it's better for this sort of thing. If money grew on trees.....

I think this was f/8 at ISO 200. @24mm on the 24-105. I remember thinking I needed to try a higher f number but I had a hard time feeling my fingers at that point. I looked through my stuff and I never did. Still, this shot seems sharp enough. Bluegreen toning w/ Silver Efex.

It's spring here and today was a glorious day... I'm trying to forget winter AFAP but thanks for the reminder.

Where's The Equivalence?

I'm finding that the "Equivalence" argument has a few flies in the ointment that I wish I'd realized prior to selling my FA31 & DA*55.

It's the close working distance differences of the lenses that are the telling points. The DA*50-135 FF equivalent lens is a 75-203mm but the fact it has a much closer MFD than the nearest Nikon lens makes it a completely different lens to the Nikon in close. The same goes for the DA*55 versus 85mm lenses. I'm finding that I am struggling to get, with the FF lenses, the impressionistic effects I liked from my Pentax lenses.

The following images are at the MFD of each lens apart from the Sigma 150 macro:
All files have the same WB values but the Sigma image is more 'yellow' then the others. That image was also shot at a later time during the day so apart from the lens the colour variatin could also be a result of changes in the light throughout the day.
DA*50-135 @ 135mm f/4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ D800E & Sigma 150 OS MACRO @ f/4

D800E & 70-200 VR II @ 200mm f/2.8 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D800E & 70-200 VR II (1.5x crop mode)

DA*50-135 (LEFT) D800E & 70-200 VR II (RIGHT)

D800E & Sigma 150 OS MACRO
This is why I don’t like the 70-200 VRII
I have used the sigma 70-200 II apo DG with pentax and will possibly go with it on the D800

An expensive error re' my 31 ltd and Da*55 on my part.

@ Ian: Are you talking about the HSM II lens?

Bossa, Honestly I like the way the Pentax renders the image the best from these Rose samples. But I'll qualify that is asking if you did some PP on them? There's a huge difference between image #2 and #3 in colour, highlight preservation and contrast.

All I did was correct the exposure to taste but I forgot to fix the white balance in a couple of the shots. (Actually it was the 3rd shot that I forgot to change the WB of)

PS: I replaced that file with a WB corrected one.

PS2: With regard to highlight preservation & contrast variations. This was a quick and dirty comparison to help me work out the focus limits to the lenses and their 'drawing style'. I wasn't really interested in perfect exposures so much as finding where the so-called equivalence breaks down. I've been selling important lenses for the past 3 weeks and I really wish I hadn't done so at this point. I won't be selling my FA77 anytime soon and will probably keep my DA*200.

PS3: I replaced all the pictures with ones that should be pretty close in colour temperature and exposure.

I had that lens myself at one point but I doubt the edges could handle a D800 frankly. I did like the lens.

BTW, don't forget there's a new Tamron 70-200 with VC and WR coming out any day now. It's predecessor was well regarded optically and hopefully this is an improvement along with better manufacturing standards.

Yeah, I was real excited about that lens until I found out that it does not have the close MFD of it's predecessor. I forget what the MFD for the new Tamron is, but I think it is similar to the 70-200VRII

I just checked and it's MFD is 1.3 meters. It seems they're all doing it now.

Maybe having to have the element in there for VR takes away the practical option of designing the lens with a short MFD?
