I was kinda joking but there is an element of truth. The Earths magnetic field shields us (for the most part) from charged particles from space but at the poles it guides them right down to the surface. It's like standing inside a flouro tube I guess.
Interesting thought--I've never heard any of the scientists up here say the aurora was dangerous. Still, being bombarded with "charged particles" from the sun doesn't sound that good.

Great shots, guys!

One pic of last night's auroras. I missed the best part, which was around 20.00 - 20.30 i think. But the show was still pretty nice. D700 & Samyang 14 2.8.

anything better than this??
C'mon, this is just stunning IMO

Amazing shots, Mark, as always! Just out of curiosity: Since you jumped ships to Nikon - any shot you would not have been able to take with Pentax? Thanks in advance!
Nope :-)

However, if anyone wants a biiiig print I can now oblige them. The way the D800 resolves detail is fabulous. The depth of detail in the tree shots when viewed full size is great. On top of that I love everything about the Nikon and also like the ability to play with dof using any of the fast 24, 50 and 105 lenses. Not sure if I put this up - a shot from the living room with only the standard lamp above the flowers for illumination. Just a mucking about shot getting used to the lens but it bodes well for serious shots.

Man, every shot you take has magic! Thanks for the explanation... Guess I'll stick with a 2-system approach for a while: Pentax with zooms and Canon 5D with primes. If I'd start again I'd go for the D7100 and if my Pentax K5 would not have been a present; I would have already fully jumped to Canon. Well, luxory problems

Thanks guys, I wondered whether I would get anything worth taking because of the position of the sun. Always knew these would be B&W images. Here's another from a similar position but looking towards the steelworks:

1/400 ƒ/11 ISO 100 48 mm

and the same shot, cropped to 4:3

There's a dark 'glow' around the chimney stack. Is this a result of the Clarity slider in LR? (I think I asked Mark this question the other day.. lol)

My only criticism of this image is that those 3 giraffes on the left look fake ;-)
