I can relate 100%. I just purchased my first car a few months ago at the ripe old age of 28, and it has transformed my photographic process. Tonight I grumbled about having to deal with Seattle rush hour traffic to get on to my shooting location(s), but the reality is, without the car I'd have had to take 2 buses and a water taxi, just to reach the first destination.
I think I remember suggesting something like this to you back when you were deciding between a new camera or a car - that the car will get you to more places to shoot, easier

Yes, I'd say the D800 is making quite a good impression on me so far. :-)
That last one especially just jumps out at me in the larger size... yes, the thrill of detail has gripped you! Congrats again.

Excellent shots v5! I am curious about your experiences regarding K5/D600... Currently I tend to focus again on APS-C/Pentax...
Thanks! I've had the D800 for less than a week so far, so I'm not sure I can do a fair comparison yet. I CAN say though that the K-5 is an excellent camera, and Pentax makes great and unique glass that I'm having trouble parting with. However, I had so much fun with the new camera last night that I'm considering going full in and selling off my Pentax system altogether... we'll see.

Quite empowering though to be able to chase the light! Looking forward to more of your shots.

I've been wanting to get out and capitalize on some of this fog myself. But too many obligations. Your shots are giving me inspiration to get out there before its gone.
Is this typical for October? I've only been here for a couple years, so I don't remember very well. In any event, the fog is a treat and a lot of fun to shoot in.

Yes, I remember you saying that as well, and it was quite sound advice.

What got me more than the detail last night was the smooth tonal gradients in the files. With transitions so subtle in the shots above, the K-5 would be struggling not to posterize a bit. Must be the extra bit depth of the D800 files?

Interesting note on the final image is that the D800's liveview does not seem remotely as effective as the K-5's in amplifying signal enough to see what you're doing through a 10-stop ND filter, even in strong light. This will definitely change my workflow a bit and makes me glad I invested in the Lee Big Stopper a few months ago, so I can (relatively) easily take it on and off. Does anyone have experience with 3-stop filters in D800 liveview? I was going to buy a B+W screw-in type for waterfall shots to fit my new wide angle, but the LV experience with the 10-stop is giving me pause to wonder if I should buy the Lee square filter instead.

Morning Grey is beautiful mate - love all the space.

Three from work - coming through the middle of a horrendous dark squall when the most amazing burst of light came through. I was fortunate to be above deck when it came in but the lens I had on was the 105DC which wasn't maybe the best.

Pure art Mark. That's just astounding, right place/time but captured perfectly. I can't imagine how another FL would have been better there.

This is wonderful, Mark.

I just bought a second hand D800E from Camera World in London, had to work hard to get money off. At the moment they are giving the 50 1.4G free with brand new...will see how it compares to the standard D800

The more I look back on it the more I'm inclined to agree - a wider fl might have diluted the scene - it has more of an abstract feel at 105.

Some with the D800E from close to home - I opened these with Capture NX2 rather than using LR5 to do minor adjustments before processing more fully in CS6
