Sounds like Sony just borrowed/tweaked the idea from Canon (Pellix mirror).
My first SLR was the Canon Pellix QL with 58mm F1.2 and booster in 1966.

The whole market is moving along at quite A pace these days! Sony has certainly led the way with getting phase af to work with live view on dslr's, and are agressively brining a lot of new tech to the market.
Sony works hard making their live view better because their optical viewfinders are crap.

Maybe on their APS-C line that's true (been a long time since I looked through one) but their full-frame models have been lauded for their fine viewfinders. Even the A850's VF, which is somewhat below the A900's, is still considered one of the best in the business.

First FF dSLR to break the $2,000 price barrier - A850
World's smallest interchangeable lens APS-C camera - NEX-5
World's first pellicle mirror dSLR - SLT-a55

Sony is exactly what the conservative, tradition-bound camera market needs. The fact that they have mindset to innovate and the war chest to test ideas in the marketplace earns my respect.

Come to think of, the biggest challengers to the Canikon hegemony has been the electronics giants - Samsung, Sony, and Panasonic. It's just a matter of time before one of them has a breakout hit.
