Nikon D7000 officially announced!

Didn't get a chance to read over all of the specs with a fine tooth comb, but it sure looks like the D7000 will be encroaching on some K-5 territor.

Nikon | ???? | ???????????????????? D7000????

So far I've found the following minor differences between them:
  • No in body SR
  • 6FPS vs 8 FPS

I'm reading the hands-on at dpreview...

It looks like a fantastic machine.

It outspecs the D300s in many places, it rocks the 60D, it improves on my D200 in every way.

It really looks like a winner.

Hello, do you know if Nikons typically have weather sealing?

I'm starting to think that my second system will be this Nikon.

And my first system will be an FA77 with whatever body I have at the moment.

the D200 weather sealing as per by Thom;

"While we're talking about weather sealing, be sure to take a close look at Nikon's drawing in their D200 brochure and technical sheets. Yes, the D200 has gaskets in many key positions. But it isn't fully gasketed. I expect the gaskets will hold out the minor annoyances of wind-blown grit and light rain from most of the major parts, but the D200 isn't bomb-proof against the elements. "

A few reports are calling the D7000 body weather sealed.

I see no weather sealing around the SD card door and unless the unit is sealed and accepts my dozen Pentax lenses with full functionality, I am no threat to buy the last one on the shelf. But its a PURTY piece of gear!

Right now, the K-7 is 1199.99 CAD.

The D7000 is on sale in the US for 1199.00 USD.

1 USD = 1.03 CAD right now...

So, D7000 at $1236.00 vs K-7 at $1200.00

When did Nikon start selling in the value market?

To compete with the market.

Obviously manufacturers knew others would design system based on the same hardware, therefore I think we are seeing the first signs of price war coming on. While I doubt Pentax will ever have the marks to compete with Nikon and Canon at this front, this might just drive prices so low that that most every Pentax owner will benefit from an upgrade.

As to how this will affect Pentax in the near future I can't say, but I am starting to have serious reservations about Pentax's future in the marketplace at this level of the competition. I can't say I've ever seen so such an aggressive year for competing products as this one.

Certainly appears to be a great piece of kit. Am looking forward to the many inevitable reviews comparing the D7000 vs K5 vs 60D. I don't think the Canon is going to come off well...

Nikon seem to have cannibalised the D300S.

I couldn't agree more.

I was about to say that the D7000 is great news for Pentaxians, but bad news for Hoya.

Looking to the mid and long-term, it could be bad news for Pentax.

I'm expecting the D300s to be replaced by a highly spec'd D400. It might well be a full pro-level APS-C camera. For plenty of shooters, FF offers no real benifit, and the extra reach offered by APS-C is desierable to many birders, and wildlife shooters. If the D300s replacement is a true pro-level, then that would have left too large a gap between the D90 replacement and the D300s replacement.

But as it stand right now, there is little reason to get the D300s.

So, maybe we are going to see a D400 that sits above the 7D sooner then later?

Hoya will need to rethink their price structure on this one.

Additionally Hoya needs to start releasing some lenses, a flash or two, and build some consumer confidence with their SDM motors.

Nikon prosumer gear is no more expensive then Pentax's. The D90 is only $780.00CAD right now. The K-r is $800.00 USD.

Pentax releases a 35mm 2.4 at 220 usd vs the nikon 35mm 1.8 at 192 USD. Don't forget the nikon is AF-S and has a five year warenty in my neck of the woods, vs the two year from Pentax.

Also in the cheap lens department, Nikon has the 50mm 1.8 at about 140 CAD vs the Pentax 50mm 1.4 at 430 CAD.

Then there was the PILE of FF lenses Nikon relesed this year. 24, 35, 85, 16-35, 24-105, 28-300. No, these are not the cheap ones.

But, hey Pentax has more colourfull K-r's and a $10,000 medium format beast.

Now I'm just ranting.

Inbody Shake Reduction is over rated

Would K-7 have shutter blur if sensor was not floating ?

I think not, well I hope not.

Nikon's making newly designed lenses, some with VR II, like the new 24-120mm f4 thats caught my eye.
Its pricey I agree, about $150 more than a 31mm Limited.

I'm happy for Nikon owners as D7000 is the bomb, a fine entry into Nikon for owners fleeing Olympus 4/3 & dare I say, Pentaxians ?

For me D700 is a great entry point, but I suspect many shooters from other brands will taste Nikon for first time via D7000.

As a long time Nikon/fuji shooter I can attest to the value of in body SR
Anything under 1/160s will benefit from it.

Having tried both systems I can honestly say the results are literally night and day. I can't count the no. of times I find myself shooting under 1/80s with SR doing its thing.
