Tamron SP 28-75mm f2.8 (Nikon)...

I thought there was a post here, but for the life of me - can't find it...

Today, I sold the lens that never disappointed me, Tamron 28-75mm f2.8, it will be missed and considering getting one for D200... I believe there are two versions: with and w/o the motor. Is the one w/o the motor has faster AF? If you used one, is it fast enough for the street use?

Regards,
D

You mean you sold a K-mount version, and are thinking of picking one up for Nikon?

I've owned both the BIM and non-BIM one, and really, I think they're both fine for 90% of situations. The non-BIM is just faster, a tiny bit less frustrating in fast/tricky situations. (I was just shooting a birthday party with mine about an hour ago!)

Yep, that's it! I think for just under $300 a good copy of this lens is hard to beat...

Just to make sure, how can one tell which is which, just by looking at the back of the lens (BIM vs. non-bim)?

Hi D

I did the same thing, sold/bought the 28-75 once I switched from Pentax to Nikon. It's a great performer on Nikon as well! I heard the non-BIM version was faster at AF, and to be honest it was significantly cheaper...so it's a pretty easy choice if you are using a body with a motor (which you are).

I reviewed a bunch of pictures online while searching for a non BIM copy...and from what I can discern the non-BIM version has the aperture ring near the mount base and the BIM version does not.

Here's a photo of non-BIM:

Here's a photo of BIM:

This may not be 100% correct as I'm new to Nikon and don't know if Tamron did a shell change for the lens, but that's what I've found.

If buying just ask if it's a BIM version. If the seller doesn't know and they have the original box it will tell them on the box cover as well.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the pics, C!

It looks like the aperture ring is the "clue" for non-BIM version. And for these Tamrons, if it's a good copy, it's SHARP copy! And works on full frame too... Don't get me wrong, I would love to have second hand Nikon 28-70 f2.8, but at $700 for the moment - I'll wait a little.

I'd love the Nikkor as well, but it's price is close to $2000 here in Canada (new), as opposed to the Tammy's $500 (new/BIM version).

I p/u a used Tammy from Ebay for $275. I'm sure with a bit of patience (i.e. a few days) you'll find one too.

Good luck and glad to help

BIM = Built In Motor

Tamron released a Nikon version of this lens with a motor built into the lens for AF, so that camera bodies without motors (i.e. D40, etc.) could use this lens.

I don't think Tamron makes any new ones without the motor in Nikon mount anymore.

I have no clue if this is also applicable to Canon mounts.

I'm in the process of trying to sell my Nikon 24-70/2.8 and go back to the Tamron. Can't beat the quality for the price.

Oh yeah, I've noticed your post. Letting go THE lens

Can't argue with you, for the price segment, fast mid zoom: Tamron is a gem! I actually used mine most of the time wide open and it was sharp and contrasty!

Good luck withe sale of your lens!

D
