Question for Nikon users

I shoot Pentax only, but I have a great nephew that just got a Nikon D3000 for Christmas. I told him I would ask Nikon users this question.

Do Nikon DSLRs have the shutter actuations limit also, and if so, what is it?

All DSLR's will have shutter actuation ratings - this is akin to the materials used in the making of the moving parts and how many typical actuations it will work for. YMMV, but from what I understand the ratings posted are quite conservative (meaning you'll likely get many more than what is rated).

Typically cameras are rated for 100,000 (most DSLR's), 150,000 (D700) and 300,000 actuations (D3 series).

In doing a quick google search the D3000 is rated at 100,000 actuations - which is the same as all the Pentax DSLR's (that I'm aware of).

Hope this helps!

P.S. Here's the link I used to get D3000 actuation rating:

Oh, and to put the actuation rating into perspective...

If you kept your DSLR for 5 years and used it the same every day it would mean that you would have to take 55 shots every day to reach that rating, or 385 shots per week.

Thanks coffee. Now my understanding is, that once the shutter stops, Nikon's can be replaced?

I sent him an email to his iphone he should respond shortly. I told him to join PF so he could ask questions for himself, but he's 17 and has other things to do besides cruise a forum.

That's a good question. Best to give Nikon a call and inquire. Most can be repaired, but often it becomes a case of the repair costing almost the same as a new camera (because of the labour in the replacement).

Ok, thanks. I'll let him call. He just emailed me and said he was going to join here as soon as he powered up his laptop.

The D40x I share with my wife just reached 12,000 shots with zero problems. Should the camera fail it would feel awkward to drop it in an electronics recycle bin but the cost of a new camera has been more than covered by that of the film I haven't been shooting.

The rating for the shutter is not a hard and fast number. At 100,000 shots, the camera might still be functioning.

It is a way for the manufactures to rate their cameras against each other, and for engineers to determine if the shutter they choose, is over kill for the job.

Generally 100,000 actuactions means that 95% (or some other percent as determined by the company) of cameras will still be working at 100,000 shots.

Some cameras will pack it in at 20,000 shots, some will get to 150,000 shots. But most will make it past 100,000 shots.

I wouldn't worry too much about the shutter life that the camera is rated at. It is very rare that a camera will fail due to a blown shutter unless if you use it like a machine gun.

Check out this link on shutter life data base.

Just tell him to enjoy the camera.
