I own the Pentax 55-300 and it's a good lens optically for it's price so I can categorically state that the Nikon 70-300 VR11 is better.
With several hundred 55-300 shots under my belt I felt that it was the best 300mm consumer zoom in the world
until of course I started using the 70-300 VR11 which is also only a FF comsumer lens.

This was a quick and nasty jpeg shot taken from a brand new camera and lens with AWB and all standard settings.
The 70-300 VR11 is a FF consumer lens the 55-300 is only crop.
Maybe do a bit of research - many tests show that form 70-200 the sharpness of this lens equals the Canon 70-200 F4 which has been tested as one of the sharpest zoom lens around.
I assume you also own both lenses hence your comment?
