A friend of mine has a TX1 that has suffered a concrete induced malfunction.

As they no longer make this camera, is anyone familiar with a good replacement?

Looking for HD video (1080 and 720), record to an SD card (they all do right?), compact, and high quality.

I know next to nothing about this class of camera.

Any opinions on what to look at?

I have the TX1 and it was the best superzoom compact with HD video mode and IS 10x zoom when I purchased four years ago but now I use my Canon SX30IS with 35x IS zoom and HD video mode. Amazon has the SX30 IS for $375.95 w/free shipping that is about the same price as the TX1 was four years ago.

The TX1 is a strange looking camera and it reminds me of those Sanyo Xacti camcorders. You'll have to ask your friend what's important in their next camera, whether it be price, size, zoom, ability to shoot raw, etc. If you're just basing it on video and an SD card, well, almost all compact cameras offer 720p these days and most are all SD card compatible. Compact and high quality? Look at the Panasonic Lumix LX5, Canon S95, Nikon P7000, or Olympus XZ-1.

I expect that a bridge camera will be seen as too large, even though the SX30 looks like it shoots awsome video.

There really isn't anyting like the TX1 on the market these days is there? How about a 10x optical zoom in a compact body?

Check out Steve's Digicam Reviews. Lots of compact bodies out there with over 10x zoom and even 1080p video.

I was thinking about a G12 personally, but maybe I need to really have a good look at some of the other compacts.
