There was a lot of controversy over renovating vs. tearing out the old, failing dam. The "wild river" people really wanted the river "free," but the dam backs up the river for miles, making it usable by canoes, kayaks and small outboard-powered boats, one of the best fishing stretches hereabout, and flooding areas left and right of its banks creating wetlands where herons, other waterfowl, turtles, frogs, fish you name it are thriving. Thank goodness they restored rather than demolished the old dam. IMHO it would have been an ecologic crime to revert to a "free river" after centuries of deep, wide water
