I've loved mine since I got it, using with my K-70 and K-3 II; will I like it as much on m4/3, is the question.

Congrats! I took a long, hard look at the EM5 III before going for the G9. Hope you have a blast with your new kit.

Having a different brand camera for a lens of course complicates things --- although I've seen some great images taken with Pany-body and Oly 100-400. I just have no idea if you're taking any kind of AF hit. I do occasionally have AF hunting issues with the E-M5ii. I've often wondered if it would be better or worse with a Pany body.

From what I've read, by using the Oly 100-400 on the Panny G9 I'll not have DFD autofocus, so it will be conventional CDAF. I don't have too many BIF opportunities anyway, so it probably won't be a big deal to me.

Otherwise, from several reviews and comparisons of the 100-400 lenses I've seen, the Oly seems to be very slightly sharper and have a greater maximum magnification, while the Panny counters by being lighter and more compact, and also having a faster aperture at focal lengths under 400mm.

So far in my excursion into m4/3 I've found that with bodies and lenses, I want some features from one brand and some from the other. The new OM-1 might actually be the ultimate body I want, but it's more than twice the price of the G9.

Yes, that's right, DFD af is out on the pany. Now I'm using the E-M5ii, which is sort of like using a Pany body without DFD (the tracking AF on the EM-5ii is so terrible as to be non-existent). I actually don't think it's an issue because for BIF I'd want a system with better ISO performance than m43. I'm only interested in animal and bird portraits --- and most bodies would be fine for that. I would just be curious whether the Pany G9 would have better SF autofocus than the E-M5ii with the Oly lens.

Every evening I put out a snack of leftovers for the local wildlife. I don't always see who actually eats it, but today a red fox came by.

Shot through the window with the Tamron Adaptall-2 300/2.8 360B, wide open...

I was very surprised when, about 30 minutes after the fox split the scene, a coyote appeared.

By then it was very dim outside, and I happened to glance out the window and saw this nearly shapeless dun splotch moving across the field. It took me several seconds to ascertain that it was indeed a coyote. I could just barely make it out, and when I grabbed my camera I didn't have much hope of getting anything. I set the ISO to 6400 and the camera informed me that the shutter speed was 1/4s. I opened the window, knelt, guessed at focus, and fired away. I could see the coyote a bit better through the EVF than with my own eyes, but it was still too dim and grainy to feel confident in my focusing. Fortunately, unlike the skittish fox, the coyote was calm and confident and moved rather leisurely.

Still, I had scant hope that my 300/2.8, which doesn't perform all that well wide open on the small m4/3 sensor, coupled with the ludicrously slow 1/4s shutter and ISO 6400, would produce anything useful.

A "record shot", at least. I had to increase the exposure by another 1 1/3 stops in PP, but thanks to the magic of DXO DeepPrime and super-impressive IBIS of the Panny G9, I did, in fact, get something useful.

Also, is this eastern coyote simply well-fed, or in a "family way"?

I would give you a "LIKE" just on the basis of capturing something under extremely difficult conditions, but the images are really quite decent. Kudos just for trying, and more for capturing several keepers.

I know my own photography of coyotes is a series of failures, mainly because I'm almost always surprised by them when one shows up for a session....

that does look like a very healthy individual coyote, but I'm in no position to state anything beyond that...
