What's your setup? Did you use flash? What lens? I might try with flies and ants that seem the only bugs around :P
My setup is pretty simple. Last year it was the Panny 12-60 with either the Raynox DCR-150 (4.8 diopter) or DCR-250 (8 diopter) attached. This year I've been using the Canon EF-S 55-250 STM attached to my G9 via a Viltrox "smart" adapter, again with either the DCR-150 or DCR-250 attached. With the Canon lens @ 250mm + DCR-250 I'm at nearly 3x magnification!
I also have the Panny 45-150 that I intended to use for this purpose, but that Canon lens has kind of taken over my life!
Despite my fondness for macro, I haven't gotten a dedicated macro lens because my macro usage dictates using apertures smaller than f/8, AFAICT I won't have any advantage in sharpness using something like an Oly 60mm Macro, due to being so far into diffraction territory. I might be wrong about that, though.
No flash. I did tinker with using flash years ago with my Pentax gear, and I can definitely see the advantages, but the setup was too cumbersome for me, especially since I sometimes like to slide my camera through the brush in order to get to my subjects.
If I'm in my yard or the field adjacent to my property, I often bring either a thick piece of foam to kneel/lay on, or an empty plastic cat litter bucket to sit on. If I'm out someplace else - well, I guess I'm gonna get dirty
When I'm in my chosen spot and settle down a bit, other insects that I may not have noticed initially start to become apparent... it's like I become attuned to that little environment, and that little environment accepts me as a part of it. So you might wind up seeing more than "flies and ants" after a few minutes.
