What are your recommendations for Wide Angle zooms? I see an Oly 9-18 or a Panasonic 7-14. Preferences, opinions, comments?

I have heard - but have not tested this theory - that the 4/3 (not micro 4/3) 9-18 from Olympus is a better lens than the newer m4/3 lens. It is available for less money but you need an adapter and focusing will be slower and continuous focus may not be possible if I understand things:

The selling point of the Oly 9-18 is it's size. In it's recessed form, it's truly minuscule. The Oly is sharp in the center and across most of the frame and features very good contrast and color. The Pany 7-14 is reputed to be sharper, particularly toward the edges and corners, at all focal lengths. The only potential issue with the Pany is a tendency toward purple flaring around lights when shooting indoors or at night with Oly bodies (there's no such issue with Pany bodies). The Oly uses 52mm filter rings; the Pany does not have filter rings.

This listing is helpful for m4/3 users.

thanks for the link. One of the more sophisticated takes for 4/3 lenses on MFT cameras I have read.

I got into 4/3rds big time and then it went belly-up mostly. l use MFT cameras a lot but they are small for my comfort level in heavy use, but the wife loves her EM5 and it has greatly opened-up photography for her. My best use of the 4/3rds lenses now is for video where they really shine.

We do have the MFT 9-18 and it is so small that it always found a place in our packs, but image quality has been underwhelming considering the cost; no flaws really, but not very sharp or saturated. We find the 12mm end of the panny and oly short pro zooms to be much better, so lately we hike with the zooms and a samyang 8mm fisheye, which is also fairly compact, inexpensive and has been a fantastic lens for us.

Good information. I see there is also a (more expensive) Oly 7-14 2.8.

I am wondering what would I want more. The 7mm length or the filter thread...

Got the 9-18mm and all shots so far convinced me. I also went for MFT for its size, and compared to the K5 and the Sigma 10-20mm it's just tiny! Now I also got the Oly 12mm as well as the Pany 14mm and 12-32mm... Too many good lenses to use the all I am afraid

Panasonic 14mm F2.5 with Fuji wide converter. Perfect example for the size advantage, cause it fitted into my laptop bag...

I am in the same boat here. Pretty tempted by the 7-14mm, though, on the grounds that it pays to invest in top lenses on this format. But it is still a chunk of change. There do seem to be some third-party filter adapters out there for the 7-14mm though I've no idea whether they are any good.

Finally got a copy as well, about to compare it to the 14mm... so far I like it a lot, though I am a bit disappointed regarding starbursts. Had hoped to replace my Pentax DA 15mm

The Oly 7-14 is reputed to be an excellent lens (as is all the Oly pro glass) but rather on the heavy side (for an m43 lens). It weighs 25% more than my DA 12-24 and (roughly) as much as the Sony FE 16-35/4.

The filter thread can be quite useful --- particularly given that it's remarkably resistant to hard vignetting, even at 9mm, as seen in the following image shot through a rather thick 10 stop ND filter:

Just got a cheapo OM-m43 adapter...

Slight bit of PP gives this (test shot):

I like the "Mobil" one.

It has that bleak, functional, charmless ambiance so typical of the Midwest I grew up in.
All that's missing is a couple of 10 year old boys hanging around an outdoor pop machine to soften it up a bit.
But that's all right - my memory is better anyway.

Elephant in the Berlin Zoo, taking a dust shower...

Was playing around the cheap Oly 40-150 R zoom (used, a hundred bucks). If I improve my shooting skills, I think this lens is an incredible value for money.
