Male bluebird with some food for his chicks, a beetle (I think) in the first image, a little spider in the second image.

To follow up on this I did some testing today on a tripod, with the camera manually focused to compare F stops at 140mm (It was meant to be 150 but for some reason I must have not fully twisted the lens, so I may have to go back and repeat it for OCD's sake).

The image below is a screenshot from Lightroom with the boat at 200%. As you can see there's no real difference between F4.0 and F6.3. This was consistent through the zoom range I tested. I would say the zoom sweet spot is between about 80 and 130 but there aren't huge differences, so in my view, it's all usable.

I also did a more controlled test of the focus variability I mentioned. In short, I found none, on either the 12-40 or the 40-150. And yet I have seen some differences. For the moment I'm putting this down to user error until I understand what it is I might be doing differently between shots. Or perhaps lighting conditions may play a part or subject contrast, it's something I need to understand better.
In my opinion, there is a difference. At F6.3, the image is sharper.

Yes I agree. What I meant by no real difference is that you probably wouldn't tell in most circumstances, given that's a 200% crop but yes it is slightly better. I would say the improvement happens about 5.6 maybe 5.0 but in reality I wouldn't be worried about using it at f4.

I agree. This is the strength of Olympus photo lenses.
