I just knew that people would want to know the dpreview preview was up

Fantastic camera, it seems. They haven't pushed the max ISO up, so there's hope that it'll at least be in the ballpark of the D700. Shame it's bigger than the D700... I was hoping more for about D300 size...

36MP is insane though, does it have mRAW/sRAW files like Canon does on some of their bodies? I am not of the "more pixels is more noise" mindset, but even the 16-18MP I get from my current cameras seems a little excessive at times even when printing decently large.

Then again, 36MP means that their DX lenses will crop to pretty high res files which is cool.

Bigger? I read it was smaller.

According to Nikon Rumors, the Nikon D800 will be smaller (and 100g lighter) than the D700

I expected 16 milion pixel like the D4.... Im gutted lol
36 milion pixel is just Ridiculous. Pentax 645 owners will be in tears though.
Oh well..... I expect the D300 replacement should have the new 16 sensor.
Should be some bargain D700 on the market though mmmmmmm must investigate !!!!!!!

Found this quote interesting-

The D3X, Nikon's current flagship, makes very high demands on lenses at 'only' 24MP and we wouldn't be surprised if some of the optics which D700 owners love so much don't shine quite so brightly at 100% on screen when bolted on front of a 36.3MP sensor...

Very few lenses are capable of scratching the surface of the D300 12 million pixel at optimal aprature in the centre of the frame lol but there are an awful lot of people try to argue the fact. You only need to look at an MTF graph to see this.

The stated dimensions are a weensy bit bigger, but it's also a fair amount lighter.

Still too cumbersome for my hobbyist derriere to carry around.

Pentax users can't exactly throw the "ugly" stone in our our current glass house environment. You know, the yellow house? The one that's shaped like a brick?

Well... I *did* put a smiley in my message. But honestly, I think the D800 is just as unattractive as the K-01, albeit in a completely different way.

Not that a camera's looks really matter, mind you. The D800 seems to be quite a machine, I'm sure the IQ will be stellar and it will sell like hotcakes.

Fair enough! And I'm not exactly disagreeing with you. Most Nikons, Canons and a good number of other cameras are indeed ugly.

I Only hope they dont put that 24 pixel in the D400 and keep to 16.
