D800 IQ is far from MF

http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d800/sample02.htm

it's like big size photos from APS-C camera...
pay attention at landscapes...

images are taken in RAW and converted to JPEG with Capture NX 2

if we compare with 645D's photos from RAW, we can say it's another league.

Not sure about point you are trying to make but I downloaded some landscape and portrait photos, beautifully clean and detailed pics compare to my small APS-C cam.

I find it very hard to draw conclusions from images like these(so many questions remaining).
Having said that, I often wonder if a smaller sensor might not be better than larger ones in landscape type photography.

Both look really good, but I dont see a $7000 difference.

I recall an article by Ken Rockwell a couple of years ago when he compared a landscape image taken by a D700 and D300 and when printed at the same size was indistinguishable. I don't question that the D800 beats my tiny X10, but I do question if it is five times the price better?

I've seen those comparisons before also. Before I jump the gun this time I will have to have some damn good proof .

With sensors bigger will always be better than smaller when printed, on screen you really can't compare as your monitor is limited to it's own resolution.
We really can't/shouldn't argue or really even compare sensor size images, each has it's own uses in whatever form we find them in...it's like comparing vehicles with different price ranges within different catergories....it's just pointless.

Erf, if those sample shots are the best Nikon comes up with, I hope someone out there with damn good glass can trump them. Looking at the portrait shot of the geisha and thinking of some of the portrait pictures from the 645D, the 645D blows it away in detail and rendering. Same thing with that picture of the snowy trees landscape.

I don't know if these sample pictures are just "not great" but.. they aren't great... I was expecting the D800 to be mind-blowing for portrait and landscape..

And not to knock - the D800 spec-wise is awesome to me (and price too!), making me desperately want Pentax to come out with something similar since I am into portrait and landscape, but these sample pictures are kinda terrible.

Are you guys aware (esp. ogl) that such tests test the lens more then anything else? A 36MP sensor has, well 36MP ... no reason to argue about resolution at all here.

But using too high an F-stop (F/8 is beyond most lenses sweet point), or having focus or shake problems can make an image appear soft.

The same hapens every time a new camera is released: First samples are "soft" because photographers don't deliver optimum results upon first trial.

I found its noise at 640 the same as my D7000 at ISO 1000

The D800 should be creamy smooth (background bokeh) at this ISO

Now I'm wondering what it's ISO 3200/6400 noise performance will be

I downloaded the JPEG's and performed the same corrections I do for the K5 images and pulled a lot of detail out of them, the sensor looks to be a performer so far.

I'd call the Geisha portrait front-focused. The best focus is not on the eyes but on the fabric at the bottom.

Also as Falk wrote, f/8 is not the optimal aperture for maximum sharpness for this 50/1.4.

The D800 has a higher pixel pitch than the 645D which translates to 1.23 times more resolution.

Of course the 645D's sensor is larger which brings a number of advantages, including a lower enlargement factor. This means that for the same image size, the 654D still is a hair in front in terms of resolution, but when pixel peeping at 1:1, the D800 should outperform it (lenses not considered).

Wrong. Right statement is: D800 lenses should provide 1.23 times better details to reach 645D resolution (for the given FOV).

I got that it was front focused, but the areas in focus were still not great.

However, I can't say it's the camera, and am more inclined to say that it's the user and editor.
