Lytro

So who here is going to get one? (Mac only for now)

Pricing is $399 (8GB 350 Pictures) & $499 (16GB 750 Pictures) ...pre-orders

I think if it's marketed properly, it's going to be "the" camera for the masses.

What do you think? I'm curious but not really interested, if the price was even lower, say half i might be .

Lytro

Very interesting.....I'd have to see a lot more to know if it has any real value in photography or is just a novelty item like a Slinky or Hula-Hoop.
Regards!

I am very interested in it, but not interested enough to purchase one. I did a quick internet search, and it appears as if the flattened images are ~1 Megapixel in size. This may be fine for web applications, but large printing is out of the question. If they can get the flattened images up to ~ 10MP, and they are able to make it into a real camera, I will be very interested. I suspect this is at least 10 years off though (as they have to develop the technology, grow their company, and I suspect they will need more processing power than is available today)

I can certainly see the facebook potential. And that of course equals money.
Now if they invented paper that you can use to print those pictures - that would be something! (For example change focus by tilting the paper gently, you know like those stripy thingies where you can see two different images depending on the viewing angle, but I'm thinking of more like 10+ different focus planes on paper)

I just don't see this geometrical optics will be any better than what has been accomplished. If some one would apply Richard Feynman's QED in camera design, that would be a step forward.

I've read that this Lytro needs something like a 10mpx sensor to generate a 1mpx image. No thanks.

Lenticular. For toys only, really.

Yeah, I know. Just an example of a starting point. It should certainly be several magnitudes better for a realistic effect.

My understanding is that they are licensing their technology to Apple, and of course whoever else is willing to pay.

lytro is a joke. it's an over-hyped, over-priced toy and always will be.

The Lytro technology is in its infancy, and as such no one can reasonably expect it to compete with fully developed technology that's been around for a while. When you were an infant, did your parents write you off as a joke and state you'd never amount to anything?
