D800 achieves best ever record score at DxO: 95!

DxOMark - The Nikon D800 is the new king of DxOMark with a score of 95

As an update, I copy paste their summary announcement here:
QuoteQuote:
Friday March 23 2012 The Nikon D4 spent only a few days in the top spot for DxOMark sensor results before being dethroned by the Nikon D800, which is a complete success in every sensor-related respect:
  • Overall score: 1st (95)
With its 4-point lead, the Nikon D800 has become the new sensor of reference — and with an unmatched quality-to-price ratio to boot: among the 8 top cameras, it is by far the least expensive (with an announced price of less than 3000 $).
  • Studio: tied for 3rd (25.3 bits)
These results are living up to our expectations. Certain people openly wondered if the D800’s results would be comparable to those for medium-format cameras, and this certainly doesn’t contradict this idea.
  • Landscape: 1st (14.4 EV)
Here also we expected the D800 to do well, and once again we were not disappointed. (This really wasn’t a surprise, given the results for the Nikon D7000.)
  • Sport (Low-Light ISO): 3rd (2853)
Despite its smaller pixels, the D800 comes up with the same score as the D4, whereas the D3x lost several precious points with respect to the D3s.

It probably explains why at my local store among the "hobbyist" moving to full frame all the pre-ordered D800s were picked-up at all branches on time meanwhile some of the 5DM3 units were cancelled awaiting the next batch of D800s to come.

I've now seen the individual scores. It is amazing how well the K-5 still performs wrt DR, the D800 is only 0.3 stops better. But better it is ...

I'm actually a little bit surprised at the DR score.

I was under the impression that once they made a FF sensor out of the same Sony part that the scores would increase significantly. Now I'm thinking that's likely not how it works.

In any case, I wonder if Pentax is going to close the gap with FF again this year with the K-3.

DxOMark - Sensor performance
managed to get there. it's pretty damn impressive. Certainly it will be very good (I still think from a look standpoint MF may well be better despite not measuring up in all Numbers (God imagine a 645D2 with a sensor developed from the same cmos stock, even if it isn't 645ff and the same crop as now it would be huge)

mmm..i'm so restless...
I didn't make the first batch...i sure hope i get mine, at least, a week before Bread and butter or i won't have time to master it to use all it's potential then.
The store hasn't replied yet, they only told me i was in the list and that they would write when my turn came up, but the wait will be horrible (not really for me since i got the forums, flickr, etc, to go by...but my poor GF...mmm let's say she's close to a saint and will deserve canonization after the long wait! i hope to bite my tongue and moderate myself!).
Once i get it i may introduce you guys to the friend who will be the depositary of my beloved Kx...i still plan to roam and write here, i like this forum, nikon ones and dpreview are less friendly and packed with more uneasy fanboys of all colours...

Who makes the D800 sensor?
I hope it's a Sony or other 3rd party chip that, perhaps a little later, will find its way into other cameras...

Makes sense: (approximately) the same pixel density + newer technology.

Interestingly, though, I've heard from the Nikon community that not that many people are satisfied with their recent product announcements: i.e. the D4 has worse high-ISO performance than that D3s, meaning that neither of the new bodies will appeal as much to sports shooters.

The 24MP Nex-7 sensor is probably what's going in the K-3. We might expect slightly better ISO perf from Pentax, but DR should map pretty closely.

Normalized DxO results for D800, D7000 and K-5

QuoteOriginally posted by Adam Quote

That's not exactly what I meant, you shouldn't jump to conclusions so quickly (e.g., you ignore sensor size and don't appreciate that pixel density is irrelevant):

If I scale ((*)sensor size normalization) the D7000 and K-5 results to the D800 result (assuming they all use the same pixel architecture), I get:

Measure: D800 / K-5(*) / D7000(*)
Color depth: 25.3 / 25.5 / 25.3
Dynamic Range: 14.4 / 14.7 / 14.5
Low light ISO: 2853 / 2685 / 2696

So, you see that the pixel technology in the D800 is almost identical, matching the D7000 overall within a tiny +/- 0.1EV error margin. That's not a newer technology, it is exactly the same deployed on a larger sensor.

So, what DxO is telling us is simple: the D800 has 36 million of the exact same pixels the K-5 has 16 million of. In retrospect, the D800 score was trivial to predict because full frame adds 15 to an APSC score and the D7000 was at 80, the D800 is 95 indeed.

Whatever Pentax did to the D7000 sensor, a Pentax D800 would probably have scored 14.6 EV in the Dynamic Range measurement. That was what my comment was about, not this trivial stuff ... :ugh:

Just one more remark ...

The DxO site essentially became unreachable after the D800 result got published (until people started to post links to google cache pages). I mention this because there is still folks out there thinking that full frame is a niche market.

OTOH, I concede that the K-01 does remarkably well (better than the 5DmkIII or E-M5 actually) in terms of current DPR hits (5% vs. 15% for the D800).

Well this performance is very good compared to D4. I did expect that D4 would outperform the D800. But I still don't want that many pixels on a K-1 since the enourmous files are not the I'm waiting for.
