My quote from another thread talking about it-

Clearly from Nikon latest camera's the mp race is far from over, it is smart marketing and they are going for the kill this year.

Most "entry level DSLR" buyers are beginners and dont know better and will natrually will go for whatever has the most megapixels.

Pentax sure has some tough times ahead...

I think "more of the same" from Pentax is not going to cut it this year

24MP will find it's way into the K-r replacement, I bet.

Not K-5's 16mp? Would both K-r replacement and the more distant K-5 replacement have the same 24mp sensor?

There are only a few sensor manufacturers around - it's just a matter of Pentax getting their bodies ready to accommodate the sensors...
I've liked the Sony sensors thus far...

I'd prefer less mp and cleaner pixels.

How big are those files from D3200? I guess most users will have a kitlens and shoot in jpg.

Biggest problem with al those megapixels is that every lovely girl turns into a very hairy bunny again

I'm guessing from the specs this is a crippled version of the nex 7 sensor with worse processing etc. (it maxes at 6400iso)
but it still changes the game for everyone else. Entry level people buy on numbers they don't understand but think are important (this receiver has 100 watts per channel it must be good, wow this camcorder is 1 lux it must be good )

They really have canon in their sites this year

I don't see why a user considering a lower entry-level camera would need 24 megapixels. I'd say 16 megapixels is best for the typical user at this level, and there's no way the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm lens will resolve 24 megapixels of detail. A 24-megapixel sensor is diffraction limited at f/7.4 (see Digital Camera Diffraction – Resolution, Color & Micro-Contrast), so this extra resolution probably isn't useful.

Leave these high-resolution sensors to midrange class and semi-professional class cameras; they don't belong in the entry-level class.

Maybe the problem is the image quality from this sensor. You can sell this to a noob, but once in a D400 to use with hi-value lenses the user is much more demanding on performance in a sportsarena shooting at iso3200.

I bet Nikon will sell a boat load of these, since you're more than likely to see them at Walmart, Target, Costco, and other big-box stores. The guy manning the electronics counter won't know any better when Joe Schmoe or Soccer Mom walks up to him and asks, "Which camera do you think is better?"

I'm sure the response would be something like "Well, this Canon is 18MP and that Nikon is 24MP. I'd probably go with the 24MP..." I've seen a similar situation play out before my eyes at my local Fry's.

this is exactly what will happen, and it's how nikon will steal huge share from canon

looking at the russian forum post from ogl i imagine the pentax line looks like

16mp entry (k-o1 w/ ovf)
WR KR replacement (hopefully with marginally crippled 24mp sensor to battle Nikon)
K5 replacement - 24mp with the bells and whistles sensor fully enabled (no artificial limitation on iso for example)
and a FF
