D700 users - Does grip help?

I was in discussion with a D700 seller and somehow could not materialize the deal since he does not wanted to sell it without grip and grip related accessories.

I have two k-x and I am very comfortable with the size. Personally, I've never handled bigger bodies and one of my hesitation with D700 was its size. With grip, size is even increased and not sure if I will ever get comfortable (I tried with grip and it's huge).

According to the seller, grip is necessary and D700 will be quite unbalanced without grip as well as FPS will be slow (although I don't care for fps). If I buy, I am anyway not going to use heavy lenses, would be limited to 28-75mm and 85mm only (at least for now).

What's opinion here from D700 or similar sized camera owners? Do you think grip is necessary?

Thanks
Yusuf

The grip only allows up to 8 FPS if you're using 8 AA batteries; if you use the Nikon EN-EL3e or equivalent battery in the grip, max is still 5 FPS.

Depending on the situation, I may use the grip or not. If I'm shooting an event or something, yes I'll use it as I can shoot in portrait orientation more comfortably with it. If I'm just shooting for fun and not under pressure, then most likely I'll go without the grip to have a lighter package.

It does provide better balance when you use larger lenses, say something like a 70-200, but you should be fine with a 28-75 or 85. You'll probably notice the weight and size increase going from a K-X to a D700 even without a grip.

I wouldn't use the grip even if you gave it to me for free.
I want the form factor of the D700 as is and I have no need for some extra fps.
My balance is fine including 70-200 and 300 mm. Oh and both horizontal and vertical.

All depend on what you use the camera for, I guess.

I don't feel the need for a grip, and I occasionally shoot the Sigma 100-300 f4 on the D700 - that's a pretty big lens. Handles nicely on the gripless body, IMO.

seconded. Grip is not at all necessary for balance. D700 is very comfortable to hold without the grip.

A bigger body doesn't mean it will be more uncomfortable to hold, heavier maybe but not necessarily uncomfortable. When I got my D90 it was larger and so much easier to hold than my K-5 which needs a grip to be as comfortable (k-5 really needs to be taller).

Anyway, how much extra is the grip? Perhaps you can buy it with the grip then sell the grip, maybe you can even profit from it.

Thank you all for responding. Even I felt grip wasn't necessary and in fact would make camera unnecessarily large.

@Verglace, difference of around $250. It would be difficult to sale, I gave that option to seller but he also thinks that it would be difficult to sell grip alone

I didn't like how the D300 felt in my hands without a grip, so I wanted a gripped D700 when I went FX.. but since the D700 was so freaking huge with the grip, and a D3 didn't cost much more than a gripped D700, that's what I ended up with

Look what I ended up with.. spoke too soon! Anyway the grip came with the camera but I like the D700 without the grip and find that the grip isn't very comfortable. IMO the grip isn't necessary unless you're shooting with really heavy lenses. Anyone looking for a MB-D10 grip?
