Yet another new toy (Panasonic ZS20)

I decided I need a better carry everywhere camera than my iPhone, so decided to get the new Panasonic ZS20.

I must admit, it's a really nice camera, and produces great pictures as long as I don't pixel peep.

Interestingly, quite a lot of bokeh from the lens even for subjects that are not very close up.

For example, this koala was at least 2-3m away from me:

Of course, being a compact, it's pretty good with macro shots:

But does a pretty good job even for non macro subjects:

The pics don't require any further post processing, but I had no problems in Lightroom applying a preset:

Fantastic photos from a compact 20x superzoom camera ! I now will keep my 8mp phone with 720p video instead of upgrading to a top of the line smartphone and just use the ZS20 I have coming this week.

It has the best video quality of all of the compact 20x superzoom cameras I have seen. I just ordered it and should have it delivered this week.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 is a compact travel zoom camera with a pretty elaborate GPS setup. Not only does the ZS20 log your location, it also has a database of a million landmarks and maps of ninety countries. The ZS20 also packs a new 20X zoom lens, 14.1 Megapixel MOS sensor (which Panasonic says has less noise than the CCD used in the ZS10), super-fast autofocus, 10 frame/second continuous shooting, a great auto mode, in-camera panorama stitching, and Full HD 1080/60p video recording.

Taken on a lunchtime walk at Clark Park, Lavender Bay (it's a bit of a secret garden just minutes away from the office towers of North Sydney)

By the way, many of these are *not* macro shots - they are taken a fair distance from the subjects

I've kicked around one of the Panasonic super zooms for a few years. One of my daughters Crew coaches in college use an older model and he consistently posted some great shots on the teams web page. It's the lack of an optical viewfinder that is keeping me away. Maybe I'm just old and set in my ways.

Christine, our paths had not crossed lately and its good to see your work/fun again. The flowers are gems.

My TZ-30/ZS-20 arrived yesterday and I've not had a chance to make any serious evaluation but I was stunned by how much the stabilization (which I need, alas) has improved over the ZS-7 which was a clear step ahead of the ZS-5. The images at 400mm+ are far more stable than the camera's retail price. Fortunately, the movement of one allows me to take advantage of the lack of movement of the other. I happily (OK, willingly) paid USD $400 for the ZS-7 as I was headed to London within weeks of wide US availability. This latest gem was USD $269 all told from Adorama, within weeks of wide US availability.

Thanks again for posting these!

To all those who have ordered the ZS20 - you will love this camera - seriously, probably the best compact I have ever owned to date.

More flower shots:

And some nice macro shots:

"Hudson" came up to play with me (my shoes can be seen at the bottom of the frame):

Another dog decided to pay a visit:

Black and white fun at Sawmiller Reserve:

Autumn leaves:

Architecture (love the detail in the church sandstone - pixel peeping perfection - there is no question the sensor delivers full 14Mp resolution in good conditions):

And as usual, great for sunny landscapes:

2001! That's pretty impressive. My first digital camera was a Kodak (!) in 1998. It has an amazing resolution - 2 megapixels!!! Why would anyone need more? :-) And it was a top of the line model - features white balance correction!!! Insane!

Anyway, enough close up shots, I think. Time to go wide and deep

This is my attempt at reproducing those cliche ferris wheel photos you see in beginner photo books:

One of the great things about carrying a compact camera is that no one is intimidated when I take photos. Here's the postman posing for me:

This bird wasn't shy either:

Comparison shots and/or comments please!

Which one will you reach for most often as you walk out of the front door?

The ZS20 since it's 24-480mm eqiv lens covers all the FL you might need on a day trip. I will use the Q when I want to use fast primes.

ZS20 @480mm eqiv full zoom handheld :

ZS20 @24mm eqiv macro handheld :

Pentax Q with 105mm Kiron macro :
