If you are going to ask who copied who, ask Pentax if they weren't a tad inspired by the Nikkor GN 45/2.8

Ah, I see. One of those DA's that really isn't a DA, but is a little bit of a DA and kind of an FA. Got it.
Well, not so much an FA as an M - it's just the M 40mm f2.8 with AF and aperture control added, and that's it.

actually the DA 40/2.8 only shares the optical arrangement of the M 40/2.8 pancake. Even the designer said they are different.

The M 40/2.8 Pancake was released in 1976 and the DA in 2004. Compare the shape and relative thickness. In addition, the DA 40 LTD received the Ghostless Coating on the rear element. While the DA may have its roots in the M and was influenced by it, it is different optically.

That's pretty cool, thanks for the info.

In addition to what you wrote, I do not think the smc Pentax-M 40mm f/2.8 has an aspheric lens as the smc Pentax-DA 40 mm f/2.8 AL Limited and the XS version do.

Two other pancakes:

This is the smc Pentax-FA 43mm f/1.9 AL Limited: 7 lenses in 6 groups

And this is the Voigtländer 40mm f/2 Ultron SL II: 6 lenses in 5 groups

It is interesting at some of the similarities between the Voigtlander Ultron and this new Canon lens.

If he had actually tried a DA 40mm/2.8 Limited or the Voigtlander 40/2, I doubt his expectations would have been low.

Let me start by saying I had low expectations. I don’t particularly like pancake lenses except on tiny cameras.
Then again, I guess the K-5 is a tiny camera.

It's a lens test, stop making it out to be some sort of slight on Pentax.

I didn't make it out to be a slight. On the other hand, you made it sound to be gods gift to the world of pancake lenses. Given the similarities to the layout of the Voigtlander 40/2, anything less than outstanding would be problematic. I was just pointing out how he alluded to the mirrorless pancakes.

You're talking absolute nonsense.

Firstly, you draw a weird conclusion that he makes it out to be the first pancake ever (which he didn't), then you accuse me of making out it's the god's gift to the pancake lens world (which I didn't)? Are you a strange and lonely person?

I merely referred to a link of an early lens test that revealed the MTF graphs to be very good indeed; at no point did I make it out to be the god's gift to the pancake world. Get off your bloody high horse.

. . .
The passive aggressive stuff isn't needed. He ignored the fact that he rents the Voigtlander 40 and gives it praises in his rental adds, but there is absolutely no mention of it in his review but he mentions the mirrorless type pancakes and goes on tot say he is surprised by the lenses performance. I would consider it more of a slight on Voigtlander since he doesn't rent Pentax gear and the close similarity to the optical layout of the Canon to the 40/2. As I already said, I would be surprised if it didn't perform well. Go back and look at posts 21 and 22 as well as the title of the thread. The thread was going before you posted the lens rental review. I didn't criticize the review, just found it odd he didn't at least mention the Voigtlander since he rents it and plugs it.
