And now the FA77 killer

OK, so it's not made for the same sensor, but the Olympus M.Zuiko 75mm F1.8 is a similar focal length and aperture. It's getting rave reviews. Extremely sharp, no CA, no distortion, and minimal vignetting, even wide open. Silent and excellent operation in the hand. And from the sample images the rendering is very nice indeed.

Check out the SLR Gear tech review, pekkapotka analysis, and Robin Wong's user study.

Looks like another must-have prime for MFT. For those with the budget, of course.

I tried the lens on an E-M5, it is indeed an excellent lens. A little bit bigger than FA77, but feels lighter somehow. Focusing is fast and spot on even under complicate indoor light.

I think it's gonna be another hot seller among m4/3 enthusiasts.

Except, as you said, it's not made for the same sensor. The FA77 wasn't even made for a sensor. It's like comparing apples to oranges.

While I don't doubt that it's a welcome addition to the M4/3 lens line up, the Pentax is an actual 77mm F1.8 and the Oly is a 150mm F3.6 equivalent.

If Olympus had brought out a 38mm F0.9 on the other hand...

If you can't have fun with a 75/1.8 on µ4/3, then you aren't trying.

Robin Wong's user review does show off the capability of the lens very well indeed.
I'm not surprised at all that the lens, being designed ground up for m4/3 will be smaller, lighter and center sharp from wide open.
That said, its a pretty long FL on m4/3 and a lens in the price range of most brands/systems 85/1.4 or just a bit under.

I wouldn't go as far as calling it a 'FA77ltd killer'. (flame bait?)
They are just too different in usage.
The FA77ltd is a nice 'oldie' lens for its price/size/build/performance on APS-C for the Pentax system
The 75/1.8 for Oly is a nice good pretty long equivalent FL lens for the m4/3 system.

Let's stop it here please. We've seen enough debate/discussion about this 'equivalent' focal length thing already

Personally I think Oly just made another winner. Together w/ the 12/2 and 45/1.8, and probably a Pany 25/1.4, that's gonna be a great setup.

Actually it's bigger and heavier than FA77, even one is made for FF while the other is for 2x crop m4/3:

FA77/1.8 Specs:
Optical construction 7 elements in 6 groups
Number of aperture blades 9
Min. focus distance 0.7m
Dimensions 64x48mm
Weight 270g
Filter size 49mm
Hood built-in

Oly 75/1.8 Specs:
Optical construction 10 elements in 9 groups
Number of aperture blades 9
Min. focus distance 0.84m
Dimensions 64x69 mm
Weight 305g
Filter size 58 mm
Hood supplied No

But somehow when held in hand, I felt Oly 75 was lighter than FA77. Probably because it's quite a bit bigger than FA77. Never held them side by side though,

I think it's a miracle that Pentax made FA77/1.8 in such a small package.

Don't call it a 77 killer if you want to avoid the sensor size comparison ;-) Otherwise, it can be a 645 75mm f2:8 killer as well!

The OP made a thread comparing the new Oly with the FA77. He went further than that, titling the thread "And now the FA77 killer".

If you want to start a new thread that doesn't call for comparisons in the flipping title, and sings the praises of the Oly 75mm/F1.8, by all means knock yourself out.

But a flawed comparison needs to be called out.

The majority of the members on this forum probably use APS-C and are aware that their FA50/1.4 won't behave the same on their crop as it would on their film. So, comparing the two stops slower, narrower FOV Oly with the FA77 is disingenuous.

Hmm, I totally agree. It won't kill our FA77 that's for sure

But I'm sure people are gonna put these two lenses together (on a m4/3 body) for some comparison sooner or later...

150mm is a bit long for anything more than specialized use IMO. Indoor basketball or volleyball maybe?

Pretty odd focal length for micro four thirds. FA 77 feels pretty long on APS-C, that would be worse. At least, there is a chance that Pentax will someday bring out a full frame camera to make the FA 77 truly feel like 77mm again, there isn't a snowball's chance in Hades that Olympus is going to do the same...

It would seem that way, not least because of this new "killer" lens's presumably tiny image circle.

I would like to clarify that I don't diss M4/3 or this lens (for its limited purpose).

It's the comparison and "killer" statement that is incorrect, misleading, and a flat-out lie.

I'm having a TON of fun shooting my fairly crappy 3MP 3D cameraphone. Whatever rocks your boat, but don't expect not to be called up should you broadcast your incorrect and biased views as a matter of fact.

And I would look forward to that comparison. It would be very interesting seeing the relative performance within the image circle.

I would hope the Oly produces the better results on a M4/3. Though it can be guaranteed that it will produce inferior results at APS-C and FF.

The FA77 can do all three. The Oly can only do one small one.
