I think Canon is plenty worried about Sony. BCN rankings show Sony is overall #2 camera maker and the NEX line has sold very well.

This camera looks like it is aimed at the NEX and Panasonic GF3/5 market.

It hasn't been a good year for Canon - the 1DX and 5D3 were ecliped by the D4 and D800E, and Sony and Panasonic have produced more interesting compacts. Even the G1X which was groundbreaking in many ways is now eclipsed by the RX100.

In your opinion, of course. The 1DX isn't even fully released yet!

Precisely my point.

And again not small with that 18-55mm lens.

22mm F2 macro? That's a surprising focal length for an APS-C macro lens. You'd squash the bugs and get pollen all over the lens wouldn't you? 43mm is a small thread size too. I wondered whether 22mm was a "normal" length, which would suggest a sensor size close to m4/3.

Nice looking camera, though.

22 x 1.6 = 35.2
Why surprising then?

Because a 35mm Macro is something you didn't see before APS-C sensors.

A 35mm macro on APS-C is equivalent to a 50mm macro on 135FF.

I'd be surprised if it is a 1:1. Does anyone do a 1:1 at that focal length on APS-C? Good for Canon if they have done it (and if it turns out to be APS-C).

This is a camera designed to give good results to people for whom photography isn't an interest.

It's more of a parenting wish; a high IQ compact camera with almost no controls and a touch-screen is pretty much on target.

I'm still not a fan of beer cans on cigarette packets though. Let's see what Canon come up with lens-wise.

BTW, how many mounts are we up to now?

60% of what we have now will be here in 10 years.

0% will be relevant (other than for fun) in 30 years. I don't say it lightly.

We are buying lots of expensive paperweights and curios, but we're doing so to capture the moments as well as we can. "Now" is priceless.

Based on the focal length and the minimum focusing distance of 0.15m, it yields a magnification ratio of 0.22 or 1:4.6 (or 0.35 / 1:2.9 35mm equivalent magnification).

1:4 was the ratio I wanted to bet on, before reading your post. It was just a feeling, but it's nice to see it backed up by your estimation.

Cheers. So not a macro at all. A usual pretend macro for those who haven't yet been exposed to real macro.

I'm not far off that camp. I need a proper macro. I have good results from my lensbaby macro, but am sure I can get results more easily. All fun regardless.

I think it is a little ambitious to call that lens a macro.

To me, it is more of a close focus lens, but then that might be confusing to the intended market.

Canon has a history of releasing the lower spec'd model first, then bringing out the higher spec'd camera.

Maybe by September we will see the tilt screen, and viewfinder models.

Vivitar had a long history of calling anything that got close to 1:4 a macro.

Where on the pics does it say it's a macro lens? The designation is "EF-M" - I thought that refers to the new mount system - for the "EOS M" - or did I miss something?

+1 on this, I think there is nothing referring to macro.

Flash options!

Well there also very different solutions to the flash.
  • This Canon M flash, wich needs battery's and is pretty big for a small flash (we will see how strong it is).
  • There is flash for the Olympus E-M5, not to strong with GN10, but gets its energy true the port from the camera's battery. Smaller, not to strong and draining the small battery.
  • The Sony small flash for Nex that takes it's energy also from the camera. Small and strong with GN20, but also twice the price for the Olympus flash.
  • Samsung has a strong GN20 flash that uses AA battery's, is bigger and even more expensive.
  • Nikon made a very small and bleek flash GN8,5 for the V1 wich is expensive, but doesn't need a battery, but drains the camera's small battery.
  • The Pentax K-01 with build in flash that has the same use, is pretty strong with GN12 and lives out off the great battery in the camera.

What use is a camera like that for normal family use without any flash?

Pentax doesn't make all descisions wrong I think.

Yes, you did miss something

Check this picture:

And look closely to the marking near the lens mount/rear lens cap.
