Help me feel ok about leaving my DSLR at home

Looking for some insight from those who own a Sony RX100 for an upcoming trip to Hawaii this spring.I’m considering acquiring the Sony for a pocket camera at home and potentially a substitute travel camera. I’m convinced by the photos taken by this RX100 group that this little compact can produce some really good photographs.I’m especially swayed by a versatile zoom, fast-ish lens, larger sensor, RAW capability, SMALL size, and affordable (I’m thinking of the M2 version; the M3 is not in my budget). Here’s my concern: I sell my photographs and sometimes find great shots while traveling, especially landscapes. So, RX100 owners who are Pentax DSLR owners as well: Will I be crying in my Mai Tai in Maui if I don’t haul all the fancy stuff with me?Or, can I count on the RX100 for at least a few good shots of this paradise?

I think mark lj may be able to answer your question best

Personally I think the RX-100 is up to the task for taking good, printable landscapes. Just use standard good camera craft (good light, keep the ISO down, minimize shake etc), shoot RAW - and bring a monopod or a Gorillapod along in the bag. The ability of the RX-100 to do easy panoramas is also quite handy for landscape. And a final point - just make sure you have a good RAW processor, and that it supports the RX-100 RAW's. Lightroom and DxO Optics Pro in particular work great with the RX-100

The combination of a decently sized, good quality sensor and a high quality lens makes for a very capable small camera. It resolves detail extremely well. I've been very pleased with it. What size do you normally print to? I don't think there would be any issue with prints up to 24" or maybe even bigger. I don't know how much difference there is in the quality between my mk3 and the mk2 but I don't imagine its that much.

It gets a highly recommended from me.

Thank you both for your helpful replies. I feel more confident now about leaving the big kit at home, especially since this is a family vacation and not a "photography journey" per se. I've enjoyed admiring your photos here and took a peek at your FB page, Mark. Inspiring! I see we are both drawn to water. We live on an island in the middle of two rivers and the possibilities are endless. But wouldn't I love to visit that Lake District of yours someday!

In answer to your question about print sizes, I tend toward the smaller end, 8x10's, etc, but experiment occasionally with larger wall art. I'll look forward to playing around with the print capabilities of this little camera.

Of course, now that I'm going for the x100, I see that the M3 is "only" $200 more, so am quite tempted. Mark, do you (or others who have it) find the viewfinder as useful as it seems? I do like the faster aperture at zoom, as well.

Before you take that step, I suggest that you do some local shooting with whatever RX100 you acquire to become familiar with it's capabilities and limitations.

If you, for instance, normally expect to do a lot of telephoto when travelling, the RX100 may not work for you due to it's limited zoom reach (28-100 I/II, 24-70 III). Similarly if you expect to do a lot of indoor flash snaps of large groups, while it's flash is very capable, due to it's small internal flash the RX100 may not do the job you expect.

If you are visiting very bright places, the internal viewfinder of the v3 will have a clear advantage over the rear LCD of the v1 and v2. When the outside light is very bright, if I set the rear LCD brightness of my v1 to 'Sunny Weather' I can get by, but an internal viewfinder would obviously work better. I wouldn't call an electronic viewfinder an absolute necessity though.

Thankfully, I have a good number of weeks before the trip to practice. When traveling, I like to focus (pun intended) on landscapes and generally leave my penchant for long-lens wildlife hunting at home. Traveling around town, I'm wanting something in my pocket for street scenes, vs the "nothing" I have in my pocket now. So the zoom range is likely to be adequate. I'm also not much of an indoor flash user, so that will likely suffice as well. Thanks for the comparison on the viewfinder vs LCD. I'm thinking I'm going to need to bite the bullet on the extra cost for the 3 and be a happier camper.

Thanks a lot for your help on this.

Waterfalls are cliche. Slow shutter ones even more so. But going hiking with a small pocket camera is too much fun.

The RX100 (Mk I) continues to astound me for a genuinely pocketable camera.

Great shots. These MK1s are getting pretty affordable. I have been holding off for a MK2 for my wife, so she has the phone connectivity that's so important to her, but the MK1s can be found in the low to mid $300s(US).

Just got my M3, so am not familiar with all of its capabilities yet, but am excited to find them out. Nice shots! Did you use an ND filter for these?

Yes. I had purchased a variable ND filter for video use in bright daylight conditions-the good ones are expensive. But it also works for long exposures.
