Bill Claff is an engineer who was rating sensors based on raw file analysis before DXOmark came along - here's his preliminary results on the D600 (based on ISO 400+ data only at this point: )

Here's a straight Photographic Dynamic Range (PDF) plot of the D600, D800, D700, and D7000. The D600 tracks right on the D800 plot - very impressive.

Had the D600 appeared before the D800, I may have seriously considered it and shot it along with the D700. D700 for whan I really wanted the AF speed and pro features, and D600 for when I wanted a little bit smaller walkabout with incredible resolution.

The D600 sensor looks great according to DxOmark. If Pentax makes a FF, I wouldn't mind this sensor being used.

What does the D600(e) mean in this connection? Has he removed the AA filter or what?

I think what is impressive is that the 36MP sensor performs just as well or slightly better than the 24MP with significantly higher pixel density. Sony has done very well with the 36MP sensor. The D800E is looking very good.
