Nikon D5200 beat K5IIs - DxO mark

Beat K5IIs in APSC segment.
The sensor is... apparently from Toshiba. Interesting.

"With an overall sensor score of 84, the new Toshiba sourced CMOS imaging chip in the Nikon D5200 achieves the no.1 spot for APS-C sized sensors

In the overall sensor ratings, the Nikon D5200 is ranked 11th regardless of sensor size. This is an excellent score for the new Nikon D5200 that can be credited wholly to the new sensor design with its improved circuitry."

That's an excellent score and maybe something that Pentax was holding out for.

It's not that much different though really.

It is pretty impressive to pack 24mp and still get this much out. And MSRP of $300 less than the K5II.

well... the K5II/K5IIs has a ...2 yrs old sensor? so it should be beaten

We are lucky to live in this generation where tech improve so much and so fast. Very soon FF sensor will be norm.

Was expecting it to be better than the Sony sensor since Nikon made the move to source from Toshiba instead. Now it's surprising that it beats out the K-5ii sensor, hopefully Pentax can get their hands on this sensor for their K-5 and K-5ii/s replacement next year or so. Knowing Pentax chose the Sony 16mp over Sony 24mp due to performance over MP of which they were going for, shows that they did not know of this Toshiba sensor and that is why they didn't use it in the K-5ii/s. Though I still wouldn't consider the D5200 over my K-5 anyday or hell even a K-5ii with the price differential. The build quality of Nikon's entry-level/enthusiast is just too plain bad. Maybe not bad, but I must've been spoiled by Pentax ergonomics.

Nice. Basically equivalent dynamic range and high iso performance to the K5, but with a bump in resolution. I am sure that Pentax is working on a 24 megapixel sensored APS-C camera, although whether they use this sensor (we wish) or the Sony 24 megapixel sensor is completely unknown.

Nice to see that technology actually does get better over the years. Also nice to see some good solid competition from someone other than Sony in the APS-C sensor arena.

Great news.

I still like APS-C a lot and hope this makes its way in to a Pentax product.

Fun to see how these are just getting better, Tho I strongly feel my K-5 IIs will continue to deliver for me for years to come.

So does this mean Pentax could actually get the next Sony sensor right away instead of having to wait past months of Nikon exclusivity?

Yes. I think this could be a significant development in terms of competition and creating more options for ongoing development.

While Sony sensors are very good, I don't think it's good to have one company dominating such a key area.

It's a small improvement, but it shows that you can still do better without increasing the sensor size! And it's also to be expected, considering that it's been two years. Looks like the D5200's scaled files will have even less noise than those of the K-5.

This also means that in a decade we'll probably see 40-60mp FF bodies...

Agree that it's probably be more like 5 or 6 years.

We all know about this nice inexpensive camera.

I am still buying a K-5 II or K-5 II's this spring, don't care about Nikon's entry level cameras anymore. The seem to put one out every 6 months and it's getting old IMHO.

Even if Pentax announces a 24mp camera this Spring? I certainly hope they will show us one soon.
