Nikon DSLR lens compatibility

Are old Nikon lenses compatible to the newer DSLRs and vice versa? How do we know if and old DSLR like D50 will be compatible to the newer VR lenses?
When I read that Pentax cameras are backward compatible with all the lenses ever made, I just assumed that no other brand does that! Now I know that is not entirely true.
