Yes, it is a DX lens.
Well, it would be cheaper to have ordered a D7100 or something similar if you are going to put a DX lens (and a kit lens of all things) on a FX D800. The old saying a chain is no stronger than its weakest link certainly holds true in this case. In other words, you are not utilizing the capability of the camera very well and cheaper one would get you the same results ( ie from a photographers view point), IMHO.

But, on the other hand, if there is some attribute about the camera that is needed and is more important than then images it produces, then, maybe, I could see some rational behind the lens decision.

Why would you buy a DX lens for it, though? You get only 16MP in DX mode, or major vignetting if you shoot in FX mode...
Good question! For the record it wasn’t my choosing. I was just told one day the Canon will be upgraded to a Nikon D800 with this lens and those accessories and that an on order has already been placed. I personally do not know the people who recommended the entire setup but they’re apparently a trusted source. I got a “deer in the headlight” reaction when I said “ooohhh D800, that’s Full Frame”.

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens and Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED full frame lenses cost a bit more than just the 18-300mm APS-C lens but at least it covers the full frame D800 sensor.

Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED 2161 B&H

Or for much less get the full frame Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD Aspherical IF Macro Autofocus Lens .

Thanks for the links. From what I gathered the18-300 was chosen for a one lens solution. If I had a say in the matter the Tamron 28-300 you suggested would've been a better option (cheaper, Lighter)..

What photographic supplier in their right mind would supply a D800 with a 18-300???? Its as if they saw the range and thought yup thats the widest we'll grab that. Ridiculous.

Eh, it doesn't matter, the bureaucracy doesn't care. That camera's potential is going to be wasted there, but have some fun with it.

Perhaps they want primarily a DX camera with FX option. The extra reach you get out of that zoom is good enough both for surveillance stills and video. And I doubt anyone is pixel peeping those out of camera JPEGs. And when the job calls for detail and resolution, they have the option of a mounting a sharp FX lens. Just a wild guess.
