First look at Sony's A7r FF mirorless body

The new A7 and A7r camera's will come weathersealed and sized similar to Olympus OMD models. Both camera's are scheduled for announcement Oct 16'th.

Here's a quick list of the rumored specs:

1) AF is faster than the RX series but still not as fast as the best in the mirrorless world
2) A7 and A7r have focus peaking
3) eye tracking AF
4) they are about same size as the Olympus OMD series
5) There is an optional vertical grip
6) They have Wifi and NFC
7) no Tri Navi, They had scroll wheels in front and back (which were very much like nex-7′s) and an exposure comp wheel from RX1.
8) One source the body quality is very good and the camera had a Pentax LX feeling.
9) 1/8000 shutter speed
10) both have tiltatble screen

Both cameras will have no IBIS, both have same body design, both have an integrated EVF on top (middle) of the camera. NEX-7 grip and a slihly OMD look. A7 has 24MP sensor with on sensor PDAF (and AA filter. A7r has 36MP sensor without PDAF and without AA filter. A7 with 28-70mm f/3-5-5.6 kit lens will cost under 2000 Dolalr/Euro. A7r body only will cost around 2300-2400 Dollar/Euro. There will be also three Zeiss lenses: 24-70mm f/4.0, 35mm f/2.8 and 55mm f/1.8. But I have been told they may show more lenses that are on roadmap.

Except the Pentax LX was not weatherproof like the new full frame E mount 24MP A7 or 36MP A7r mirrorless cameras.

There just weren't any sealed lenses.

But those lenses didnīt have any electronics that would go bad from weather inclemence... Very small particules would be a problem, but the lenses were easier to open and clean.

I love WR but it is over valued.. More so when most people think it is thought for water.. Rain wonīt hurt even normal DSLRs or lenses. Itīs oil, grease and dust (on our hands) and WR is nice not to care about it when working, hicking, climbing, sweating...

I had the LX with winder, motor drive and all of the finders but I just did not remember it being weather sealed so I guess the new A7 and A7r is like the LX.

Looks like it could be a good option to finally have digital "full frame" for my FA Limited lenses...

This is going to be an interesting 12 months. We have a mirrorless FF from Sony going toe to toe with a conventional OVF Nikon D610 FF. Current Dpreview price for D610, body only is about $2000. This may be Sony's moment in the sun.

I think the WR feature is a big thing. Top of the line DSLRs have often been WR, but not the entry and midlevel. for example, i don't think any of the Nikon cameras up to D90 were water resistant, although the D7000 was. My brother lost a camera due to rain, and it wasn't dunked.

Then we have a very nice spec'd out Pentax APS K3 with switchable AA filter.

Tough decision.

I bet E mount adapters for full frame Canon, Nikon, Pentax etc lenses will pick up after they come out.

What I really wonder about is whether there will be a light stop advantage on FF as with the APS-C models? And if so, just how big a performance improvement that would translate too?

Using the Canon 85mm F1.2 lens with Metabones Third-Generation Smart Adapter like in that photo on a full frame E mount NEX-VG900 , A7 or A7r would have the same exposure as on a Canon 5D MKIII. If you use a Metabones Speedbooster with full frame lens on an APS-C Nex camera you would pick up one F stop light advantage and cut the FL because it has a .7x focal reducer built-in.

The LX had no winder or motor drive standard so I guess the A7 is not like the LX since motor drive is standard with the A7.

LX with optional motor drive :

SONY mirrorless FF will not be cheap, I'm afraid.
