Over the past few years, DxOMark's tests and scores have provided a numerical measure for the Raw image quality potential of cameras. They've therefore been debated at some length by enthusiasts looking to see where their favourite model stands in the rankings. Now there's a new DxOMark Sensor score champion, but perhaps surprisingly, the first camera to break the 100-point barrier isn't a full frame model from Nikon or Sony, but the RED Epic Dragon movie camera. How did it manage that?

While the results and quality of output from this specially-adapted Epic Dragon are awesome, it’s all the more extraordinary, considering the sensor size and pixel pitch. It’s hard to imagine anyone being disappointed by the Dragon’s performance (except maybe at extremely high ISO).

Given the Epic Dragon’s price tag, this camera isn’t for everyone, but it will appeal to those that demand the most nuanced color and with widest possible dynamic range.

More importantly, the ability to choose a high quality still photo from a movie sequence will be invaluable to time-pressured imaging professionals, in the studio or elsewhere. While this will take some time to filter down to consumer level HD-DSLRs, this new technology just may forever change the way both footage and stills are shot in the future.

What is the equivalent shutter speed this records in? If you want to grab a still from a video of, say, a person moving around, I'd think 1/60 of a second for 60FPS would make for a blurry image depending on how fast they're moving.

And if you are recording in a a compressed video format, you don't want to grab just any frame for a still. You want a key frame for best IQ in lieu of an interpolated frame.

Whatever happen to their Scarlet for under $3K? I was really interested in that at the time.

I think they realized their target market is not hobbyists. They are still cheaper than the really high end cameras and the people that use them tend to really like them. You buy a modular system and are sure that it will all work together.

I think Black Magic Cinema and the better m4/3's offerings are going to own the sub 3k space. Canon also could do well with the new AF system in the 70d if it makes it into a full frame some day and Canon ups the capability a little.

I can't remember the highest shutter speed at the moment, but the RED cameras have a great selection of speeds to choose from. They definitely allow up to 1/1000 or higher to help freeze motion. They can make excellent stills, hence the DSMC (Digital Still and Motion Camera) that RED calls their cameras.

For work, I pull quite a few stills from our Epic footage, and nearly every frame of slow motion footage is crisp enough to use, so long as you select an appropriate shutter speed.
