No - That's not a Pentax

Received my B&H Newsletter this morning and lo and behold, here was the new Canon Rebel SL1 now available in white. I personally don't like the looks of it but found it interesting. Was that from their own think tank or are they wanting to tap into the color options that Pentax has offered and has created a market for? Inquiring minds want to know.

The SL1 was / is a marketing response to the Pentax k-x / k-r cameras. Marketing is all about buzz terms like "smallest dslr" or "only dslr available in colors". For a while Pentax marketing could make those claims, even if they did not IMHO make the most of it. So the SL1 was designed to take those claims off the table. Whether it sells, or whether it is a good camera are completely secondary. It was a strategic product made in response to a competitor's marketing claims. Nikon also introduced colors in some models. I doubt either company is committed to color, they just want to be able to say: "oh yeah, we have colors too, no big deal".

I'm not sure how important the colors options are within this market segment, but both Canon and Nikon have recently started offering a few new color choices. Definitely just a marketing move

Nikon and Panasonic have been offering alternative colors for years.

Canon had some of its earliest Rebels in silver, too.

Wouldn't be surprised if Pentax revisits smallest dslr marketing. Don't forget the original ME, ME Super, and MX. All were to be smaller than Olympus OM offereings. Entry level people like small cameras.

thanks

The 36mp full frame Sony A7r is smaller than the 1.6x crop SL1.

That's bad, the SL1 is already way to small to comfortably hold... was Sony cutting costs on raw materials or something?

I don't see a problem.

Overall I agree but the MX was not, in my view, an entry level camera. It was made with decidedly non-entry level features such as drive, interchangeable back and interchangeable focusing screens - that did not need any adjustment!

I actually might try a Sony, for once - and (egads) an adapter for all these FF lenses - but -

Is the A7r a dslr?

At 4x the price of the SL1, is the A7r entry level?

The 36mp Sony A7r is an entry level full frame 36mp camera that has image quality like the entry level MF 40mp Pentax 645D.

40mp 645D vs 36mp A7r
