Panasonic has announced its Lumix DMC-FZ1000 superzoom camera, which features a 1"-type CMOS sensor and F2.8-4.0, 25-400mm equivalent lens. The sensor is not only the same size as on Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 - it's also the same resolution (20.1MP). The lens doesn't have a constant aperture like that of the Sony but it has a greater reach, topping out at 400mm rather than 200mm. The lens uses Panasonic's Depth from Defocus technology, which promises faster focusing.

The FZ1000 features both a fully articulating 921k dot LCD as well as a high resolution (2.36M dot) OLED viewfinder. A ring around the lens barrel can be used to zoom or manually focus. A full suite of manual controls are available, including highlight/shadow correction and in-camera Raw conversion.

The big story on the FZ1000 is really its ability to record 4K video (that's 3840 x 2160) at 30p, with a bit rate of 100Mbps. The high video resolution allows users to grab 8MP stills from a video clip. The FZ1000 can also record HD video at 1920 x 1080 (60p, 60i, 24p) and 1280 x 720 (30p). While there's a stereo mic built into the FZ1000, serious videographers can attach an external mic using a standard 3.5mm port.

As with most of Panasonic's high-end cameras, the FZ1000 has built-in Wi-Fi and NFC. The camera can be controlled from your smartphone, and image sharing is easy, as well.

The Lumix DMC-FZ1000 will be available this summer for $899 / £749.99.

Our copy had a severe decentering issue, though. We're waiting on a replacement from Panasonic so we can re-test.

that thing looks like an incredible value for the $$$, however...
1) shoots very long, but not wide at all?
2) i've read several reviews on this camera, but not one of 'em bothered to test the parfocal capability of the lens... is it, or isn't it, and by how much.

nobody in the dslr scene seems to know or care about parfocal capability, lol

i didn't even see anything on the panasonic fz1000 site about it.

just an incredible degree of ignorance.

for me the smaller 1" sensor should equate to ultimate portability as with the RX100, along with good IQ - I would still rather use my D7000 than the Panasonic - which is not that much bigger and has a much larger sensor

As mentioned on previous pages, the only real competitor to the Lumix DMC-FZ1000 is Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-RX10. The RX10 was the first big zoom camera to feature a fast lens and 1"-type sensor, and comes at a premium price: $1299.

Panasonic's entry also has a 1" sensor but offers a more powerful lens, though the maximum aperture range isn't constant like on the Sony. The RX10's movie mode is very impressive, but Panasonic goes above and beyond with 4K video support and a host of recording tools. One might expect the DMC-FZ1000 to cost as much as the RX10, but it's actually $500 cheaper.

For those looking for a superzoom camera that excels at both photo and video quality, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 delivers. While it doesn't have a constant maximum aperture of its biggest competitor - the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 - the FZ1000's F2.8-4 lens covers a much greater 25-400mm equivalent range. The FZ1000 has an advantage over ILCs, as any lens you add to one of those cameras will be larger, heavier and pricier.

The FZ1000 is indeed a large camera, but is easy to hold and operate. It's incredibly responsive, especially when it comes to autofocus performance, and both its EVF and LCD are impressive.

Image quality is also impressive, allowing the FZ1000 to perform as well (and sometimes better) than the Sony RX10. The FZ1000 excels not only in still image quality, but also video. While other cameras are working their way up to 1080/60p, the FZ1000 has made the jump to 4K, which has four times the resolution. Even when viewed on traditional displays, movies look fantastic.

All things considered, the Lumix DMC-FZ1000 has a lot going for it, and little to complain about. It makes a compelling alternative to the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10, especially for those who want more zoom power and next generation video. With an MSRP of $899/£749/€850, the FZ1000 isn't cheap, but some things are worth the price.

It looks like a great camera. Big and pricey, so no idea if that would be complicating things, but my guess is that this wil sell good.
