Canon is going to catch up with Nikon and Sony and have an "s" sensor?

Could be something completely different. Something truly, "big".

Deleted due to being way off topic and completely uninteresting.

Something big? How about a digital 8x10 for all the Ansel Adams wannabes?

I believe there is a strong possibility it will be a professional level, high-end, camera for cinematography that will compete with the Alexa and Genesis. Canon DSLR cameras had been making inroads in the motion picture industry at certain levels for the past few years. More recently, with the introduction of the Cinema EOS, they have started showing up on surprisingly higher end productions. Granted, these have mostly been circumstances where a, b, and c camera are Alexa or Genesis. More and more they are becoming the inexpensive "go to" for extra coverage; at $15,000 for a Cinema EOS and $100,000+++ for the Alexa (Panavision does not offer the Genesis for sale) it's easy to see why.

Canon has gained a foothold in "Hollywood", albeit a small one. They have, more importantly, gained a modicum of trust among influential members of the camera department and crew in general (the general crew reaction inevitably follows the camera department's), albeit at a certain level. Certainly to the leve where Canon are no longer sneered at, and make no mistake, this was the initial reaction on many a set. What I find most telling is that Canon cameras are becoming more welcomed than that "other" camera that tries to compete with the Alexa and Genesis; quit interesting, indeed.

I digress, but only to illustrate that Canon has an opportunity that needs to be addressed sooner than later. With the Genesis' immediate future beholden to the fate of Panavision and the "other" company's lackluster reputation, Canon has a golden opportunity if they can actually deliver a camera that can compete head to head with the Alexa. If my friends in the camera department are to be believed (of course they are) then Canon will most certainly become more desirable than Red (there, I named names) and, in all honestly, it appears to me that they're already more than halfway there. It's the Alexa they need to compete with in the end but effectively supplanting Red in the "Indie" and commercial world could be the just the start of "Something Big".

All of this, is of course IMO and, as such, pure conjecture.
The two year old Canon C500 4K camcorder is $20,000 and Canon zooms for it are $40,000 + each so over $100,000 for the C500 and the two zooms.

Here's the Arri lens price list but, to be fair, I mostly see Panny lenses (as mentioned above, not for sale) in use.

Not trying to elicit a debate about their relative costs but it is what it is. Arii is currently the dominant choice for professional motion picture production; they have little competition at the moment and their prices are commensurate with their reputation. I doubt few in the business would have guessed, even 15 years ago, that Panavision would be in the state it's currently in. They were the king of motion picture production. I doubt any would have guessed that a Canon would be a potential up and comer, either. At the moment, though, Canon are in competition with Red when it comes to motion picture use. I think they will set their sights higher though.
Really ?

I wonder where 'something big' would be likely to sit in their lineup?
