Samsung NX1 BSI Sensor

I find it odd nobody is talking about that fact that Samsung is using a back-side illuminated sensor in the NX1. This really should be the best performing APS-C sensor on the market.

The sensor is more than just BSI. Samsung call it ISOCELL, and while it seems promising, I will await some techical measurements from the likes of DxO.

"ISOCELL technology forms a physical barrier between neighboring pixels – isolating the pixel. This isolation enables more photons to be collected from the micro-lens and absorbed into the correct pixel’s photodiode minimizing undesired electrical crosstalk between pixels and allowing expanded full well capacity (FWC).

Compared to conventional BSI pixels, the ISOCELL pixels decrease the crosstalk by approximately 30 percent which results in higher color fidelity to reproduce the original color with sharpness and richness, and increase the full well capacity (FWC) by 30 percent which leads to greater dynamic range."

Yes. It looks like an interesting step forward. I look forward to seeing some tests. BSI alone is promising on a large sensor. I'm surprised it didn't first appear in m4/3.

I'd love to see some tests of this new sensor paired with their amazing 85mm f1.4 lens!

Yes. The Samsung 85mm is an excellent lens. Samsung is building a very solid system with some great lenses. If the NX-1 lives up to the hype, Samsung will have an excellent system going. They finally seem to be getting it together. Now they need to push distribution.

Wow, just found out this thing has bluetooth, too!! I've been wanting that in a DSLR for years!! Amazing. This is looking like it may be the best non full frame camera on the market, and without a doubt, the best mirrorless body.

Wow. Impressive Samsung tech, impressive geekery on behalf of Imaging Resource.

Just show me the DxOMark for the NX1 already.

Yes. On paper the camera is very impressive. Its probably the best piece of technology to come out of the 2014 show. I honestly have never given Samsung cameras much attention. The only lens I have held was the 85mm F/1.4. I don't even remember what body it was mounted on, but I thought it was a really nice lens for the money. The body was a NX100/200/300 or something with rather poor AF, but the lens produced very nice images. I'm really interested to see how the new technology really works in the real work. The have a whole lot of processing power and flexibility in that body.

As mentioned in this interview (http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2014/09/27/photokina-interview-samsung-...ntum-leap-tech) the sensor does not use ISOCELL. ISOCELL is of benefit in reducing light leakage/crosstalk between adjoining small sensels (1.4µm or smaller). The NX1 with its 3.6µm sensels has no need for it.

Comparez le Samsung NX1 (présérie) aux Sony A77 II et Nikon D750

First comparisons. Only JEPG, but some people might want to vote.

Merci. It looks like the votes are stacked in the Samsung's favor, but honestly the FF Nikon kicked it in the fine details on most shots (where focus was nailed). I preferred the colors of the slightly underexposed Samsung images, and the tones were great. No big difference in noise, but ultra-high ISO is not my thing anyhow.

That's quite a write up. All totally alien to me... !

Can we have a "summary" of that this will do for (non beginners) photographers ?

Samsung NX1 / Sony A77II / Nikon D750: Your Favourite Was... Samsung!

Looks like the votes from the blind reader test are in. ........."against all expectations, you by far preferred the Samsung NX1, which came in first, well ahead of the D750. The Alpha 77 II finished last with three times fewer votes than the NX1."
