Or the project might never get out of development hell, or production yields may be so abysmally low that the sensor will be prohibitively expensive to produce in larger sizes.

IN short, I really don't want to get excited until it makes it's way into a camera. As with Samsung's 28 Mp backlit sensor. Great theory, but the IR images are not as good as the K-3s at 3200 ISO. My question became, "why did they actually produce this sensor, we're they really thinking they could sell product, just on marketing hype?"

Yes, but tech advances don't always turn into saleable products.

We're talking about Sony developing a new type of sensor here. Like the humble little Samsung and Sigma did before them. Not about some crazy science fiction concept like a stable pertuum mobile, hyperspace drive, a cure for every imaginable disease or a digital FF Pentax. (You guys were begging for it.)

It says base ISO 5100, with a dynamic range of 22 EV.... 9 more stops dynamic range the dynamic range at 5 times the sensitivity.

The same principle as with ultrasonic dust removal and SR AA.

That's 21.3 EV, but still...

Also:
"The only question is how this triple exposure time will work on moving subjects and long exposure shots"

It will work on long-exp just as it's always worked: shorter exposure times stacked one on top of another.

Wasn't this discussed on another thread? The miracle sensor is a 1.5cm video sensor with about 4.4 Mpx resolution. the tech may eventually make its way into larger, high resolution sensors, but for now it is rumored to be a specialty product optimized for what might be incredible 2K video performance...assuming, of course, there are image processors capable of keeping up with it.
