Sony a99.. Soft images?

So, i recently shot video of a graduation (yay for first paid gig!) and i cant say I was all that impressed with the video capabilities of my nikon. No peaking, exposure tools, limited codec choices all made for a somewhat limited feeling. As much as i love it to death for stills, i really need something that has better video in addition to the stills. The sony systems look to be much better on this and i was looking at the a99 because its full frame. However, i was looking at some stills and something wierd. In the shadows, there is almost this wierd effect.. like compression artifacts or something? Thing is most of the sample shots were taken with pre production models.

The iso 25,000 almost looks like some sort impressionist work

Ive shot at iso 25000 on my d600 and it was atleast passable... Below is from the d600

But like i said most of these a99 samples started showing up a few months before it started shipping. Can someone who has shot with it chip in? Thanks!

The A99 has a first generation sensor in it, so its not up to par with the newer 24MP sensors, but it is still more than capable of professional results. Lens selection is very important to get the most out of it. You want the lenses that work with AF-D mode. I expected Sony to release the A99II with the new 24-70mm F/2.8 ZA SSM II Vario-Sonnar. If you need ISO 25,000 then go with the A7s.

Iso 25000 isnt really something i find myself in need of every day. The vast majority of what ive been shotong is at iso 100. The video and the af (especially in video) is very intriguing to me.

I've never shot video with it, but the stills are great. It has an older EVF so its not as nice to work with as an A7 camera. The A99II is due out very soon and i expect it to have all the video features of the A7s and shoot 4K internally.

Yeah, I'd wait for the A99II.

While I fully realize that there are cases and people out there who do not have the luxury of doing so. I would personally never rely on in-camera noise reduction for any system if I was aiming for high ISO output. ie, here is an ISO25600 image taken in very low light and developed/processed w/ACR and Topaz Denoise.

PS. Oddly enough, the Sony A99 is about equal to the Pentax K-5 in terms of SNR performance, and while it does however lack the magic ingredient dialed-in by Pentax engineers at high ISO, it has the advantage of sharper pixel output. Which I found to be a fairly even trade in most circumstances.
