behind what? You're assuming, for some reason, that a fixed 35mm lens is better for everyone than the ability to choose a lens based off our needs.

Well, perhaps you could go and buy a Sony, and then report back to us after a few months how good they are

They put a sensor that already exists into a body that already exists and gave their flagship a feature that other FF manufacturers already have. That about cover it?

Yes, it's not a race - so a comment like that is meaningless.
What the OP means to say is "Pentax falls farther and farther behind in my expectations" - which is why there are other brands to chose from.

over $3000 for a point and shoot - at that price Sony should be winning

Does that RX1R even have a OVF/EVF or do you have to hold it out in front of you like a phone camera (which totally sucks)?

It has a cool pop-up evf, just like their "affordable" $900 p&s.

As opposed to craning your neck down into a real camera like one of these?

my guess is that it has the same evf, same sensor, and same af technology that's on the a7rii.

the fixed 35mm prime that sony has been putting on these cameras is arguably the best 35mm prime that's ever been made; the mtf charts i've seen are insane... as in, approaching better-than-leica kinda territory.
https://luminous-landscape.com/sony-rx1-review/

the leica 35mm f/2 Summicron-M lens is $2811 at b&h... with this sony you get a 42mp camera and a killer lens, for just a few hundred more.

afaik, past rx1 models were criticized for little eccentricities like af or whatever? only 20mp?? etc... a lot of that could be fixed here.

If Sony has just now added 14-bit raw, they're the ones who are behind!

No but seriously, Pentax has always been a generation behind technologically, but they're ahead in other areas such as ergonomics and features for still photographers, so that balances things out.

not seeing pentax standards like ibis nor pixel shift technology with this sony, either.

also no 4k? not that pentax ever had 4k, but sony is giving up some things with this model.

A nice package, but US$3300... wow.

The old RX1 needed a $599 external EVF, this one has one built in, so that'll save buyers some bucks I guess. But no built-in flash...

"The camera’s sensor features 399 phase-detection AF points that cover about 45% of the image area - the world’s widest AF coverage on a full-frame sensor ".

That's a very fancy AF for a fixed lens point-and-shoot. I guess that 399 point PDAF is just integral in the Sony 42MP sensor.
