Sony a68: A-Mount, Translucent Mirror, and 4D Focus

Yes, they probably lose 1/2 stop DR to the pellix mirror, but clearly in good light it matters not.

Thoughts? (I happen to think they have something decent here)

Compared with Sony A77 II released 1.5 years ago, most specification are the same or lower on A68.
4D AF seems to be the new thing on A68, whatever that means.

Of the newer cameras out there the Lumix G7 intrigues me most. Several companies are now making m4:3 lenses, and to me pulling stills from 4k video beats a T-mirror every time. Sensors are nearly APSc talented & some of the lenses are pretty neat - and really compact.

It looks like this camera will have a small, low resolution rear screen and lower resolution viewfinder than it's pellicle relatives, plus a plastic mount. It seems more like a lackluster a58 replacement to me. I find it strange my old a55 from 2010 had a higher resolution screen than this, which imo is very important when you don't have a true optical viewfinder. Also, Sony puts a "true black" coating on their rear screens that comes off really easy and then the screen becomes nearly unusable without it due to glare and no contrast. A screen protector is essential with a Sony DSLT.

A-mount really? I guess the reports of the death of A-mount have been greatly exaggerated.

Even the 4D AF featured on the A77 II.

The A68 is simply a budget A77 II. Same sensor, same AF, same metering, but lower spec EVF, lower spec tilting LCD, lower fps, plastic lens mount.

Nothing interesting.

fwiw, it has a mic input, which afaik the a6000 doesn't have... looks like it has selectable efcs, which i don't think is available on the k3ii, nor any dslr, unless it's used with the mirror up: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/172-pentax-k-3/307295-pentax-k-3-ii-elect...n-shutter.html

so the efcs would be an advantage, but then again it probably can't be used burst shooting mode.

the evf looks to be just slightly smaller than the evf on the a6000?

Does it really have only one e-dial in the front? Having two e-dials to me says that the camera body is aimed at a higher level enthusiast or pro looking for a backup body. A single e-dial says this body is aimed more for people who shoot only in full Auto Mode. Different crowd, different performance requirements. I think the K-3 still sits a step above this but I didn't look too deep into the A68.

After looking a bit closer I have to agree with you. Still, the price point is very aggressive and it suggests that there still is a need for "DSLR" type cameras even in the Sony world.

Sony has plenty of crop cameras. The question is if they will ever come out with another alpha mount full frame camera.
