Nikon D5 and D500

Nikon fills in the blanks on professional grade D5 DSLR: Digital Photography Review

Here at last: Nikon announces D500: Digital Photography Review

The D500 will probably be more expensive than the K-3 since it is positioned above the D7200. Gives Ricoh something to aim for. But look mom! No OBF

and this: a theta killer 4k 360 video

Great, Nikon skipped the D400. That's what everyone really wanted! Boo hiss!

oooh! D500 = a mini D5 -- smart move by Nikon.
10 fps with a 200 shot buffer for Raw images too, sweet.
Seems like Nikon shooters will pair the D5 with a D500 for extra "reach" with their current FX lenses.
Which suggests it unlikely Nikon will offer any serious DX-only glass, leaving a window of opportunity for Pentax to keep expanding their crop-sensor system in parallel with the K1.

Those are some pretty crazy specs...153 AF points? ISO 3 million? Jeez!

Nikon sure upped the game for aps-c A custom 20mp sensor (it won't be the one in the K-S1/S2) en al around great specs. But hey the K-3 is not that far behind and much cheaper .

The D300s replacement was certainly a surprise. Nice specs (4K, 10 fps, 153 AF points)

The Keymission 360 is a weird theta competitor. Some nice features like 4K, VR and ruggedness, but its far more bulky and probably cost multiple times as much as the theta.

The D5 is not likely a K-1 competitor. I think the K-1 will be a high resolution camera aiming more at the D5SR. I guess there will come a high speed K-1 companion aiming at the D5 and 1DX segment later.

The max ISO is a pointless number game. Just like a decade or two ago when video cameras competed to have the highest amount of digital zoom.

I don't care much... ...but is this D500 the successor to the D300?
Would that put the D500 as a competitor to the 7Dii then?

Yes, its a D300s successor.

With a price around 2000$ vs 7DII 1800$ (at launch) they are both far more expensive then a K-3II. If only one could sync two K-3II, alternating between exposures, the K-3II would outspeed the fps significantly.. for a short while.

If its a market for a 2000$ ASP-C camera, Pentax should consider making both a ordinary K-3II successor and a more expensive ultra K-3II successor.

And if you could sync two D500's then you'd be back to square-one.

Great for sports photographers, but probably over kill for most of us.

Still, maybe an indication that APS-C isn't quite dead yet, if Nikon is finally going to release another high end one.

These are a mighty impressive pair of camera's. For the first time I actually have some Nikon envy. I doubt I'll ever be in the market for a $6500 camera, but that D5 is droolworthy from a spec POV. hopefully the next iteration of the Pentax K3 will leapfrog the D500 back to the top of the pile.

Ricoh still needs to release a fast focusing sport lens to aid a camera with high FPS which Nikon has if you want to consider any new and improved K3 iteration "on top", in my humble opinion. But I'm sure that will be coming out soon.

Unlikely I'm sure, but I think that D5 sensor (if it lives up to it's specs) would be the ideal one for the Pentax FF to share, smaller body, a bit less insane technical speed, significantly lower cost than the D5. And then perhaps another FF "super" with a 40+ mp sensor but inferior low light. for those that want resolution over low light.

Kinda takes the bite out of the anticipated K1. Granted it's MSRP is $6500 for body only, but for us in dire need of pro AF it's tough seeing rumors of only 36 points when Nikon just announces 153.

No, then you are back to the square price of four Pentax K-II s, in sync.
