A new element of the camera arms race. 1 MP+ RGB metering sensors will probably be common soon.
I actually think we will see a 2MP RGB/PDAF sensor that has enough resolution to implement real facial recognition AF in the not so distant future.

I just wonder if you are either shooting out of camera jpegs or, comparing images on a pixel level. If you are comparing D810 resized images, shot RAW with D500 images shot the same way, the D810 should show a stop advantage in SNR. The D500 is good for APS-C, just not at full frame level.

But as I mentioned above, folks are going to get a D500 for other reasons than just high iso ability.

I'll do something a bit more scientific on the weekend.

I get the feeling that in the not-too-distant future, in DSLR's the [currently separate] RGB sensor will merge into the imaging sensor, as may the [currently separate] PDAF sensor apparatus. The light path from lens to optical viewfinder in DSLR's will soon be much simpler.

Currently, mirrorless does this. Putting the PDAF sensors on sensor has some drawbacks. You can't make the PDAF sensor very big or you have a negative impact on the image quality. Off sensor PDAF allows for larger (more sensitive in low light) sensors. I think the Sony A99 has the integrated the RGB meter into the sensor.
