Never got into phones myself...not much of a phone talker or user.

Free phone and about $7. per month does me just fine...I keep my minutes and currently have around 600. I think it can do some stuff too...but I just use it for calls every so often. works for me. It does have a camera...pretty crummy, but I can do crummy even with my K1, so that's not much problem.

Mrs Rupert is a "phone person" and she uses a Microsoft Lumia that mates with her Microsoft Band and her computer running Windows 10. It is amazing what she can do on that phone, but it's too complicated for me.

I will say her phone was a lifesaver on our recent road trip to Oregon. It has that Cortana girl that gives you directions and when you are in strange places/cities and can save you a ton of frustration. I think Apple has a girl like that too? That alone was worth the price of her phone. Amazing stuff in these little phones nowadays!

I read an article last week about how all these phones will be obsolete in a few years and replaced with some new technology. Sounded interesting until I got to the point where you had to sign up for some stock-seller newsletter, and I figured it was just one more scam looking for a new sucker?

Regards!

It fascinates me that there's an entire media sector devoted to pointing out every little real or imagined flaw in Apple's iPhones, and barely any critical analysis of the others. A bit like media coverage of every Pentax, really, when I think of it…

You've not been following the Galaxy S7 saga in the media, Rob? 😀

The only reason anyone reported on it is because the FAA banned them...Once the media was paying attention Samsung was quickly shamed into recalling them.

I have, indeed, but that actually underlines what I said - it's taken a disastrous flaw in a Samsung product to bring out any criticism. In the meantime, I've been seeing dozens of columns talking about the millions of iPhone users who are devastated and angry about the change from swipe to the Home button to unlock it. LIke I said, the difference in treatment fascinates me, mainly because I'm trying to figure out whether it's a tribal affiliation thing in some media outlets, or whether people are getting "cash for comment" or whether it's just a successful click-bait formula.

I do think there is a difference between iOS and Android cultures, Rob - one of expectations.

That's probably true, too, but does that necessarily extend from disinterested users (note that I'm not saying they're uninterested, just that they have no financial interest arising from their opinions) to people who write for a living? Call me old school, but I expect those who make their living from writing about things they observe to do so in an objective manner, but it seems that the lines between journalism, entertainment (including fiction) and commercialism have become much more blurred recently. Journalists (bloggers are really journalists in the older sense of the word, just without the Code of Ethics in many cases) are, of course, only human, so I have never expected perfection, but it seems that any pretense of objectivity has gone the way of the Dodo in much of what we see online.

Quaint! 😀

For starters, they're getting a pay cheque from *someone*.

Yeah, I know, but what else would you expect from a lifelong Citroën owner?

So does mine. My more income than he needs step son gives me his old ones when he starts a new contract. Tess got the last phone, I got the a Galaxy S5. I don't care what kind of phone my phone is as long as I don't have to pay for it. MY battery in my iPhone 3 is getting a little weak, but I only use it when Tess and I are shopping indifferent stores so, it's not really an issue.
Funny.... after retiring I didn't want a phone anymore but after a while I got the handme down phone mostly so I didn't have to tagg along at the shops. Bought a $20 ebay battery and put in it earlier this year.... good for 3 or so days again.
