I'm sure I'm not alone in seriously hoping that Nikon weather this more or less intact and are not snapped up by Sony or somebody - the competition that drives innovation is vital to the photography market (and hence consumers), and Nikon are big players in pushing the limits.
When I was young and just starting my lifelong photography hobby, There were literally dozens of brands to choose from. Most of them are all gone with only a handful left. Some of them made some fine cameras, too. Nikon and Olympus have been going through a rough spot in recent years. I really hope they can weather the storm. Competition brings innovation and we all benefit, regardless of what camera system we shoot with.

Yes among other things...

...such as a historical drift towards consolidation and/or monopoly - competition after all is a, more or less, amoral process at best and not an ethical system.

I'd say those were features of capitalism, not competition - capitalism is always sold as being about free markets and competition, but it's actuallu about what you say - consolidation and monopoly.
