The only problem is that feature wise 40D was positioned more against D300 as Canon's highest end APS-C camera. The fact that it sells @ 1000 USD it's the result of how it performs and the fact that D300 had remain very close to it's original price and Canon was heavely discounted shows that.
The current range seems to be:
- entry level: Canon 1000D, Nikon D60, Pentax K200D and soon Pentax K2000D essentially a smaller, cheaper, lacking some features K200D ;
- mid level: 450D, D90, K20D;
- top level APS-C: 40D, D300
Seems to me that on the last 2 levels Canon is masively out gunned on performance and features and hence it must be the cheapest.

P.S. Canon 40D has NO WEATHER SEALING at all from what I know except some foam on the battery and card doors. Anyway to claim "some weather sealing" is like you say "some pregnancy".
