4.5fps, 12mpix sensor (probably the D300's CMOS sensor), live view, HDMI and GPS connectors.

If those specs are true then I don't see how Pentax can possibly trump it unless they go well above the $1000 price of the D80/90. Seriously, what is left to do that a camera needs? The only thing a serious amateur could possible hope for is weather sealing and maybe more megapixel's (for some users, 12 is fine by me). Any other features would just be marketing hype and fluff. I think you are right on the money with that statement. Who needs video in a DSLR? I still think Live View is a joke, one of the "perks" of the SLR is the R.....THE REFLEX.....through the lens people!

or they can just keep developing sensor technology...

do you realize how the consumer photography would would change if one of these guys invented a concave digital sensor for instance?

I see Nikon becoming a distant nr 1 in a very few years they seem much better these days than Canon and hopefully Pentax could attack too the Canon's entry level cameras with the new K2000D.

The D90@ 1000USD when launched will battle with K20D which will already be at that price by then if not lower. And hopefully the new K1D will better the features and IQ of D90 (for more money) and all we need would be a weather resistant zoom (something like DA 18-135) to have our own trump cards.

I disagree with this. While it may seem gimmicky to some, it is an advancement that really helps when shooting from low angles. Where do you draw the line on what advancements are acceptable and which are mass consumer gimmicks? If live view makes my job as a landscape shooter or macro shooter easier, isn't that what it's about? Shouldn't the "tools" we use be as effective as we can possibly make them to get the results we want? Just my 2 cents.

FYI, I asked Thom for clarification on the video bit: the D90 apparently packages audio/video together into a single file. That's what Thom meant by "video". He didn't know if it was AVI or MPEG though nor does he remember the frame resolution.
The K20D records 21fps into separate frames/files and you have to put them together yourself...

Well the 40d is already under 1000USD. Sure it is one year old and 2mp less, but it also has 2.5 more fps and some weathersealing. I doubt d90 will have the af of d300 though.

Jake,

The only problem is that feature wise 40D was positioned more against D300 as Canon's highest end APS-C camera. The fact that it sells @ 1000 USD it's the result of how it performs and the fact that D300 had remain very close to it's original price and Canon was heavely discounted shows that.

The current range seems to be:

- entry level: Canon 1000D, Nikon D60, Pentax K200D and soon Pentax K2000D essentially a smaller, cheaper, lacking some features K200D ;
- mid level: 450D, D90, K20D;
- top level APS-C: 40D, D300

Seems to me that on the last 2 levels Canon is masively out gunned on performance and features and hence it must be the cheapest.

P.S. Canon 40D has NO WEATHER SEALING at all from what I know except some foam on the battery and card doors. Anyway to claim "some weather sealing" is like you say "some pregnancy".

Right now, the D80 with a kit lens is around $1000 and it still sells even though everybody expects the D90.
I bought my GX10 a year ago and back then, the D80 was $1300 with a kit lens and it was already a year old.
Considering how well Nikon is doing at the moment, the features announced on the D90, and Nikon's lineup, I bet you it will be closer to $1500 than $1000 (body only)!

I gave up crack because it was eating my lens money

. Here the word is that the initial price will be 1000 Euro (I don't know if kit of body only). Right now D80 body only is 630 Euro (incl. VAT) and 860 Euro in kit with 18-135. So, 1000 doesn't seem so far fetched and I think Nikon mirrors prices in euro/USD.

If they follow their same plan of bracketing the Canon 40D with the D90/D300 like they did with the D80/D200 then yeah, I'd say $1100 is reasonable. Those Nikon people are nuts. The D200 was still selling for $1600+ even after the D300 was announced for $1800. Besides, right now you can get the D80 for $730 body only, so I think $900-1000 for the D90 body and $1100-1200 for the kit sounds fair.
