Nikon D500 ?

Hello to all,
Has anyone here shot with Nikon D500 ?. I am thinking of get a second camera for BIF . I have read the Nikon D500 is good for action .
If someone in here has use one of this Camera ,please tell me how is the Auto focus ?. I am also think of getting the new Tamron SP 150-600 F5-6.3 DI VC USD G2 if I buy Nikon D500.
Need your help please !. I have trusted people in here, because I have used my first DSLR with Pentax .

I believe @RockvilleBob; uses a D500 and Sigma 150-600.

My suggestion(s) would be to look into the D750 too. It's AF is also reputedly very competent, and the image quality overall will probably be better than D500.

I'd also look into the Nikon 200-500 f5.6. It has the advantage of constant f5.6 aperture throughout it's zoom range, meaning all your 153 AF points will stay active with the D500, whereas with the Tamron you may only have 37 focus points to work with at the longer end of the zoom range.

I usually shoot with a Canon 5D Mark III (and in the past a 7D) for birds including BIFs. I borrowed a friend's D500. He had the second version of the 80-400mm which was OK optically. The D500, however, was fantastic. Amazing AF tracking and relatively easy to use controls. I think if I was starting all over I would strongly consider that camera.
Re: I've been shooting with the Tamron G2 since the week it came out. Prior to that I shot birds and sports with the G1 version for about as long as that model has been out--18 months or so. I've also rented the Sigma 150-600mm C just to see. The G2 is the best of this bunch. Noticeably faster AF tracking and better optics than the G1. The Sigma C was a hair better than the G1 and not quite as good as the G2. The G2 is also much more weathersealed. I've also fine tuned the G2 AF using the USB Tap-In Console which is new for Tamron and similar to Sigma's USB dock. It was a PITA to get all the adjustments (18 different shooting configurations), but the result was surely worth it. I don't know the Nikon AF point system, but on Canon I never utilize the full gamut of AF points available--I just use the expanded middle cluster of 9 AF Cross points and it works well--not perfect, but well enough. The D500 was better though. The build quality of the D500 seemed markedly superior to the D750 which always seems cheap in hand to me. Not up to 5D Mark III standards.

I use both a Nikon D500 and a Pentax K-3. The Nikon D500 is the camera I choose to use for wildlife and for sports/action photography. I bought the Nikon D500 for its autofocus capability and I have not been disappointed. I use the Sigma 150-600 Sport lens which offers very good IQ even out to 600mm. If needed the Sigma TC works fine with this lens. You can see some examples of the Sigma 150-600 Sport lens on a Pentax Thread.

Long time no post to the Pentaxforum, because I switched into Nikon a couple of years ago...
Anyway, I've got both D500 and D750 and I've been very happy with them both. I think they're an excellent combination of FF & DX properties, as well as AF capabilities. For football I usually have the D750 with the Nikkor 200-500mm f5.6 and D500 with Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 VRII. The D500 is an absolute beast for sports and action, but I also use it for stuff like this, together with the 200-500mm glass: Instagram

D500 is the more solid one of these two, with no pop-up flash etc. It just feels a solid block of well built machinery. However, I've never felt that the D750 would be a toy, either. I've shot a couple of matches in absolutely pouring rain with it, as well as in freezing temperatures, and haven't had any issues. The AF is quite good, but the keeper rate with the D500 is higher due to both the better AF as well as the higher frame rate.

All in all, you can get excellent results with both cameras.

Thank you to all of you, who had posted your opinions about the Nikon camera and lenses. I feel more confident to buy the Nikon D500 and Tamron lenses for birds in fly shot, after I read all your posting. Thanks very much for all the helps.

I just saw this thread. If you have not made a decision, as a D500 (+ Tamron 150-600 G1) owner I may be able to answer some questions.

The D500 is on my wishlist bet here in Oz prices usually are above $AU2700.... I do use the D750 for the pass 2 years and love it ...But DX would give me the reach

I knew that I can find any answers not going out of this forum to search.

After shooting BIF for a couple of days, both with K-1 and K5iis, I realized that I'm not happy with both cameras AF for the fast birds. Not like my focusing skills are perfect, but they are good enough for challenging shooting, imo.
I realized it's time to change my setup, and start looking outside Pentax. I keep K-1 which I love so much, but need to put money toward better AF camera for BIF.
Then I realized that I can call a friend who has D500, 200-500mm, and 18-300mm. He agreed to let me test his camera, and we will go out togeher to the park, maybe this weekend.
Looking forward to it.

I'm looking forward to your impressions of the 200-500. A while back I had the chance to shoot with it briefly, attached to a D7200. I was super-impressed with the 200-500 (less so with the D7200). The lens has had a bit of a hold on me since then.

I hope we will meet for testing this weekend, it depends on how busy he will be. Maybe next weekend.
I plan to take my memory card, shoot with that lens, and with 18-300, and then post tests on flickr. I will test specifically BIF, preferably flying toward me.
I could get only one in focus image yesterday with K5iis. Out of at least 30 shoots. Not counting failed attempts to react fast, but a bit late.
Yes, cormorants are so fast, and I felt like my focusing is too slow. I wish to test Nikon the same way.

I met a guy last weekend shooting a surf contest I was at with the D500.Turns out first time he had shot surfing, but shoots sports professionally.

He was a fullon Nikonite, also had a D810 which he uses for landscape.

IMPRESSIVE backup from Nikon here in OZ.If anything breaks he has a next day replacement till what he owns is fixed.

The waves were poor last Saturday, so I told him to show up today seeing the predicted swell sounded promising.Didnt see him though.

I've met the guy with D500 and 80-400mm lens today. I asked him to let me hold his camera. It's very similar by weight to K-1 with DA*300.
