Sorry if I wasn't clear - I mentioned Sony buying Olympus as a more apt comparison, because Sony "helped" Olympus by investing in a non-photographic business (without taking over or anything like that). This seems similar with that Fujifilm would supposedly do.
If I'm not mistaken, this is about Nikon's sensor lithography business, which is under pressure by ASML. Perhaps the goal is to prevent this business to fall into Chinese hands.
Precisely correct.

What's Amsterdam's policy on sovereign funds buying Dutch companies (like ASML)? There are reasons why Japanese chip fabs like Toshiba and Fujitsu would prefer an alternative supplier that isn't 15% owned by Intel, but Nikon Precision is domiciled in Belmont, California and Langen, Germany, so I'm not so sure about the role of national interests. Sales for Nikon Precision are growing, the main threat from ASML is from its patent portfolio. If there is semiconductor lithography technology with military advantages, I would think the American government would step in to restrict access to Chinese firms. And why couldn't the Chinese steal the technology they want ?(rendering the lawsuits between Nikon and ASML moot)

On the other hand, Japanese optics are still world class and that's the result of generations of expertise in manufacturing, which is much more difficult to steal.

The government seat is in The Hague. Amsterdam only makes policy for coffee shops and tourists . Sadly Dutch companies have to rely on their own constructs to protect from hostile take overs. Dutch politicians are extremely naive about intentions from foreign investors and rely on the market to sort it out. ASML is a driving force of Dutch innovation. it is actually a company that started within Philips Electronics from which it has been made independent. Philips itself is only a Dutch company in name it acts more like an investor than a manufacturer. Frequently selling of parts of the company. Televisions are now Chinese and part of TP-vision. Audio is now part of the Gibson Guitar Company (after a sale to Funai went awry) Philips doesn't even have a majority share in it's lighting company any more. (The light bulb is the root of the company. Many Dutch even thought Philips invented it instead of Edison).
