In the land downunder we have SLSC ...SurfLifeSavingClubs.

Our population is mostly coastal dwelling and the hot summers draw people to the beaches to cool off.

Consequently,poor swimmers or non swimmers can get into difficulties and the clubs mark out the designated areas between 2 flags and they observe those areas and attempt to rescue anyone who looks to be in trouble.

Interclub contests, state and national titles happen to test the skills of the high end people.

One category is IRON MAN which involves board paddling, surf ski paddling and swimming.Its a pure endurance race.

TH was a champion in his earlier years.Looks like he is into photography these days.

A few from me with the K-1 and 60-250mm f/4. Unfortunately I didn't have the 150-450mm with me at the time as I wasn't expecting to see any surfers.

Its not Hawaii but those guys look to be having fun.

First shot really captures the action, as an active wave rider it activates the memory of the sensation.

Oh yes, you have Langland and Caswell which can have some pretty good swell then Rhossili which is an area of outstanding natural beauty in Wales, and voted one of the world's top beaches (somewhere, if I remember rightly)!
I really ought to get back on a board. I learned to surf then never kept it up.
