New $$$ony pocket camera

$$$ony has upped the ante and the price for compacts.

U$ 1200

It looks quite capable but a small Panasonic system can be had for similar outlay,i suppose some people will like the convenience.

What Sony has done with the RX100 is pretty impressive. As is updating it annually and maintaining a >$1k price tag for the latest model.

As is the fact that you can still get the Mark 1, brand new, for < $400:

Whats a 24-200mm cost with f2.8 at the wide end?...Whats a 4K video Pentax cost, better still,When will it cost something?

I think this camera is overpriced too compared to the 2 excellent Pentaxs you mentioned. The launch YT by MG above points out some of the people who will be attracted by something with this capability and form factor. The 17x11 prints mentioned as tack sharp by the $$$ony manager sound OK(if ya wanta print that small).

I think if I were shopping for a KP I would not look at the rx100 series I would look at Sony a6xxx series cameras

And also this is why you would want Rx100 but you can get one that meets your budget they still sell all the versions brand new

Exactly, brilliant strategy.

I purchased a Mark 2 when Mark 4 was out, still very happy with the outcome

Sony's technique is not to have different tiered gear, it is to drop the price on older gear and keep it on the market. You can still buy an A7 for 800 dollars, even though it is a pretty old camera. So most of the time with their camera bodies you are best off waiting a bit.

It’s a really good strategy. Early adopters know that they’re paying a premium, and aren’t bothered by it. The budget conscious can just wait and have the same tech in a year or two. And Sony doesn’t have to spend design and mfg dollars repackaging a design to fir a budget line. Either they overproduce the cameras at the start to keep Per unit costs down, or benefit from time and sunk costs lowering the costs of manufacturing.

I have never been interested much in marketing but Sony's game over the last few years has added interest to the field. Of course, it has worked so far because the products really are interesting. What the long term holds no one can tell.

I'm being picky, here, but it's not really a 24-200mm f/2.8-4.5... more like 8.9-74mm f/2.8-4.5 with the 2.7x crop factor taken into account. But no less impressive for all that, and with f/4.5 at the long end, it's still gathering a decent amount of light for most situations.

It's a lot of money, but every one of these RX100 series cameras has been very good. I'm sure there'll be plenty of people ready to buy it...
