Is this silly? Using Pentax K300 f/4 and MA200 f/4 with Olympus m43 boby.

Hi all.

I'm thinking of giving a try to an olympus m43 very cheap used item , buying to couple it with my K300 and/or A200 lenses via adapter. I would use this combo for a coming vacation in the muntains, most of all for shooting static subjects in nature, some slow-moving or distant subjects like distant animals in the wild. Would it be silly? Perhaps someone has already done this? Any advice is welcome. Thank you in advance.

Matteo

People routinely use K-mount tele on Q series cameras.

On m43 the crop won't be as drastic, but old lenses (K, M and A series) usually have plenty of resolving power so you should be good.

Thank you LensBeginner. I would give it a try as a complement of my primary kit. Despite some CA the K300 is a really sharp and beautiful lens .

Using a camera with a smaller sensor can be regarded as just another form of cropping, with the advantage that all the sensor MPx are concentrated on the cropped portion. This is a more compact solution than getting a dslr with more MPX with a view to the same result: a bigger image of the subject. It also avoids the increased f-stop from using a tc, and concentrates the image along the optical axis of the lens where its IQ is best. I have an old M43 camera - a 12MPx lumix G1, but rarely use it with my long lenses because its IQ just isn't as good as my K5/K3 or samsung NX20, and because those cameras have more MPx there isn't any image size advantage anyway. I do use the G1 a lot to check out old lenses of different mounts - I have adapters for all the main legacy mounts. But everything is effectively normal or telephoto FoV.

As long as the lenses used are up to the more concentrated demands of the small sensor this is a good way to go.

Exactly my purpose . Given the fact that I already have got the lenses, I'm trying to maximize the crop in the tele department (cheap way). My primary set will be Nikon d800 with Nikon glass but I have 200 mm max with that. I like the idea to expand over the in-camera DX mode (1.5 x - 15 mpx) with a heavier crop (2x with m43) but good glass and at least 16 mpx. 400-600 mm eq. FL (with image stabilization) would be a lot of fun

Other than the loss of autofocus, I would expect it to perform well. It is interesting that the M43 Olympus 300mm F/4 is about the same size and actually heavier than the DA*300.

Completely different design philosophy.
Modern lenses are better corrected for aberrations, and this usually implies a more complex design with more elements.

The tradeoff with old lenses was often higher resolving power in exchange for some aberration on high-contrast borders, since different wavelengths (i.e. colors) don't focus all in the same place.

The Pentax 110(18/24/50) are great fun on M43,especially if you have the Q sized GM1 or GM5.

K mount glass goes well on all the M/L(ive tried,Q/M43/Samsung/Fuji), ive no direct experience with CaNik$$$ony M/L.

If you're silly, then I am really silly. For three years now, my birding kit has consisted of a Q-7 and a K-mount Sigma 70-300 APO lens

Thank you all. I suspect that the adapter ring could be a cheap one, given the fact that no information would be trasferred to the body. Is it so? I've found an oly om10 mII for about 250 Euro I will give it a try.
