From what I understand the Fuji instant camera is their best seller and generates substantial income. I have seen them at Walmart and didn't even know what they did, but they are quite popular.

Canon makes small cameras, and they make small printers, so this is a natural target for them - and they can always use the money. (*)

(*) When I was in college, Indianapolis car dealer Bob Catterson used to do his own ads that ended with "old Bob needs the money". He sold the dealership to his son-n-law Dave Mason but included in the deal was a 'personal appearance' clause, and for a number of years he was still doing ads for them, now ending with "old Dave needs the money" {I found the details I had forgotten in an Indianapolis Star article "15 Celebrities only a real Hoosier would know about"}

Neither Pentax News nor Rumor, moved to correct forum. Non-Pentax cameras.

and from the linked DCW article:

"Fujifilm – which has seen monster sales of 900,000 instax cameras a month."

Next likely headline: Olympus to enter instant camera market.

The instax cameras are a lot of fun. Surprised it has taken canon this long to enter the market.

These cameras don't make them money, it is the film that is doing that! Have you priced the stuff? 13 bucks for 20 exposures!

Aha, makes sense. Canon are very experienced with the business model of cashing in on the consumables, as anyone who has owned one of their bubble-jet printers will attest.

At the other end of the market we have another competition (or maybe it is only marketing hyperbole). The new Samsung Galaxy 10 is marketed as having a "professional" grade camera. But I suppose it should as it costs almost as much as a "professional" DSLR.

Has anyone actually seen an Instax camera in the wild?

I know that they have sold extremely well, but I just haven't actually seen any in real life...

I've seen a couple at garage sales and I just saw one at my parents house. I did not get a chance to ask them if they were using the camera but I saw no evidence of pictures taken with it.

I do wonder how many of these cameras are sold and only used once -- the owner never buys another refill of film because the novelty wears off by picture #10.
